Can I paint wooden kitchen cupboards?

They are old and dated and I'd like them to look a bit brighter. Can I paint wooden cupboard doors? I have NO idea how to go about this. Do I need to use a primer? Do I sand first? What do I use on the melamine bits? HELP!

TIA

yes, you can paint kitchen cupboards.

you can buy specialist kitchen cupboard or melamone paint, or you can use a good primer - i like zinsser BIN - and then any paint you choose.

the important thing is to make sure the cupboards are completely grease free before you paint - a good scrub with sugar soap is needed.

i have a painted kitchen - i used washable matt emulsion because i like the finish. a friend used egg shell on her (old) wooden cupboards and they also look great.

Thanks Ceres. It will be good to do. I am quite excited!

It's also a good idea to use a coat of two of varnish on top once your done - you can get satin or matt if you prefer that look to gloss, to prevent chips to your hard work!

I used eggshell on mine, but I have also done a previous kitchen with emulsion and varnish on top and it looked lovely.

Thank you - are there different primers for different things then?

I am a diy virgin.

use a small smooth roller for an even finish

Thanks Custy - I'd probably have used a brush then wondered why it was streaky
