Can I ask a silly question about neighbours?

Ok, so we have lived in the city for 10 years, typical flat in a converted house on a street of similar properties, where there are lots of renters who don't stay much longer than a year - hence we don't know many of our neighbours.

We are moving to a lovely leafy suburb soon - but what do I do about the neighbours?? Do I introduce myself straight away on the day I move in and apologise in advance for my feral children? Do I wait for the neighbours to come round bearing freshly baked pies? How far up the road do I go when introducing myself to the neighbours? Just the ones each side and opposite (luckily it's quite a small street!) Help please!!

Ours came round to us within first weekend. Only ones either side. Not sure what I would have done if they hadn't. No harm in introducing yourself to immediate neighbours though. They'll be nosing at your stuff when you move in so ample opportunity to say Hello then

We moved in a few weeks. DH introduced us to the new neighbours by reversing our car into theirs.

It was mortifying.

But they have been absolutely lovely to us since and im sure we will laugh about it together in years to come...

I don't think there's a done thing but I think it would be lovely to knock and say hello and introduce yourselves. Just either side and maybe opposite like you say. I'm sure you will meet the others in due course. Always good to foster good relationships with neighbours - ours are lovely.

Good luck with the move!

I was planning on knocking on the doors the day we move in (if I remember!) to say hi and incidentally, sorry for blocking you in with the removals van...

Also planning on holding a housewarming party a few weeks later for our friends, and inviting the immediate neighbours to that too.

Here's a query - do you go opposite as well as next-door? I've hardly ever spoken to anyone I lived opposite to. Maybe that's why...
