I want a basin with a cupboard underneath it - why is it so hard?

My head is going to explode. Redoing bathroom, I want a basin with a cupboard underneath it. Maybe I don't know what this is called but I can't seem to find a website that explains it clearly or that seems to sell what I want for under £300

Can I just get a pedestal basin (two a penny) and get someone to fit a cupboard around it or am I insane?

There are a few in IKEA for under £300. I looked at them at the weekend. Some with drawers, some with cupboards.

nigglewiggle · 13/07/2010 23:22

We did this in a bathroom in our previous house. We had the cupboard made and bought a separate bowl with waste etc online. I don't think it cost us anything like £300 as we had very little money.

TheNextMrsDepp · 13/07/2010 23:23

Try Bathstore, they have loads.

happilyeverafter · 13/07/2010 23:23

We bought a countertop basin from bathstore and had a small cupboard made for it to sit on.

There were some in Ikea but they were all much larger than what we wanted

DitaVonCheese · 13/07/2010 23:25

Thanks

I am going to Ikea tomorrow to pick up a brochure so might have a look if DD cooperates

I have looked at Bathstore online but found the site baffling - the one cupboard I liked didn't seem to have a basin that fitted it They have a store near here but I think both DD and DH will have a low tolerance for visiting bathroom shops.

FIL is a very talented woodworker so that might be a good option ...

woodworker best option as means you can choose the best you like best rather than which has a cupboard that fits.

EBay have heaps of sinks, search for "countertop basin"

I can email you a photo of what ours looks like if that is useful?

That would be great, thank you

What's wrong with B&Q or Homebase? Quite a range of 'bathroom furniture' there, particularly B&Q. Especially if you don't want to pay over the odds. Much cheaper than the Bath Store from what I can tell, but it's not exactly cheap and nasty either.

DitaVonCheese · 13/07/2010 23:47

I'm finding all those websites sooooo confusing. It took me a while to work out I wanted "bathroom furniture" (I thought it would be under basins), now I don't know whether it's freestanding or modular and when I click on those then the options are baffling ... I need to go to bed to prepare myself for DD's 5 am wake up call ...

Email sent, hope you find something.

I found bathstore really reasonable for basins but their taps were horribly expensive.

We bought a very expensive tap from the plumbers merchant that we got the shower from and it's not very good at all, doing 2nd bathroom atm and I'm getting taps for fraction of the price from ebay. If they are rubbish we will replace them after a while.

galletti · 14/07/2010 00:02

I second bathstore. We got a great one from there three years ago, but have also seen them in catalogues since. Bought taps etc from elsewhere, using advice from plumbers.

savoycabbage · 14/07/2010 00:16

We have a cupboard and three drawers and it is the best thing ever. They are kitchen ones and so is the counter top. They are the same as the ones in the kitchen.

MrsKitty · 14/07/2010 04:18

We've got one from Ikea - would link, but can't find it on their very website!

It's a rectangular sink which sits on top of a x2 door cupboard. Was around £200 for the whole thing, I think.

MrsKitty · 14/07/2010 04:23

Aha - just had another look... Here it is. Comes in various different permutations (search 'bathroom basin' and go to page 5 of the search)

SixtyFootDoll · 14/07/2010 05:39

WE got ours from B and Q they had loads if IIRC

notasize10yetbutoneday · 14/07/2010 08:14

We got ours off ebay for £50 new, it was white with louvre style doors at the front and slots under the sink. I think we searched for 'under sink cupboard'.

DitaVonCheese · 14/07/2010 09:22

Thank you all very much - I have had some sleep and am slightly more sane

hello. yes i agree with you the ones which are bathroom ones are over priced, look cheap and not a lot of choice. an alternative is to use a kitchen cupboard?

DaisySteiner · 14/07/2010 11:10

The prices on this site seem very reasonable.

biryani · 14/07/2010 20:43

I had a new basin atop a large cupboard tailor made by builder as I couldn't find one large or solid anough. Cost - peanuts.

lalalonglegs · 14/07/2010 22:46

I saw surprisingly nice ones in b&q last weekend (cooke & lewis range, I think).

ticktockclock · 14/07/2010 23:04

We have one from IKEA as well www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S99862981. We bought taps we really liked from ebay.

Laquitar · 14/07/2010 23:14

Have you seen the bargain one in ikea?
5 pieces for £69 i think. One basin unit, one tall and slim unit (very nice), one smaller, and a miror.

MrsTicklemouse · 14/07/2010 23:15

DaisySteiner's are lovely and under budget

DitaVonCheese · 14/07/2010 23:49

Thanks for all the replies. Checked out Ikea today but moving fast due to tetchy toddler

Daisy those are fab but all the ones I like are out of stock

Tempted to go the DIY route I think ...
