A warning about Tesco Meal Deals pricing!!

Just to warn you if you order a tesco meal deal as part of your tesco.com order.

I ordered a Finest Meal Deal which costs £9 - which includes a bottle of wine worth £8, a main course, side and dessert. It flagged up when I had my delivery that my main course was not available so I had a susbstitution.

However, I did not notice til later that on my receipt I had been charged full price for all the components of the meal deal - this added up to £18!!

I phoned to complain and was told that if the sustitution is not within the meal deal, then they charge full price for all the food.

After a lot of complaining I got some money refunded to me. But beware if this happens to you as it is not flagged up in the substitutions list and can easily catch you out. It is not right that Tesco can so this!

the whole of mn went funny earlier and all we got was the title, so we couldnt actually read any threads, hence lots of weird postings .

i promise i will read it properly now

Hardys · 10/03/2010 16:52

deffo worth knowing. bloody cheek. they should flag it up and let the driver have a note on your paperwork, so you can send it back straightaway if not what you wanted.

JGBMum · 10/03/2010 16:57

We had the same experience, ie ordered meal deal but wasnt available and got a subsstitution, BUT when I phoned Tesco and pointed it out, they were really apologetic and refunded the differece straight away. I did point out that as the deal was available when I ordered it online, I had no way of knowing it would be sold out by the time they packed my groceries in the shop.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Did you call the central helpline number on the receipt? I have always found them to be really helpful - unlike the staff in the store!

frankie3 · 10/03/2010 18:27

When I phoned the central helpline they were really dismissive and said that I should have read the terms and conditions on the website! I said that after 5 years of doing Tesco shopping online I am not going to read the terms and conditions every time I buy something with an offer.

I then phoned customer services who completely agreed with what I said and refunded the difference. The woman said that she agreed with me, and that it is unclear.

They really need to flag the whole meal deal on the substitutions list. I bet a lot of people are caught out on this as not everyone checks the details of the receipt. Another way for Tescos to earn money!

I have had the same with the 3 for £10 wine deal. Even though I put a note saying 'any 3 for £10 will do' to substitute they regularly ignore it and substitute with another bottle. This means I get billed for £15-£20 rather than £10. I'ts so frustrating I dont bother anymore.

Divatheshopaholic · 10/03/2010 21:45

If they charged you wrong you entitled double the difference. You should get paid double the money they charged you.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 10/03/2010 21:48

We had this once, snet back the substitution without realising but rang the central call centre who immediatley apologised and refunded the cost of all of the items.

This week we had a meal deal and did really well - the bottle of wine alone was woth £9.95!

citybranch · 10/03/2010 21:54

we had this and DH complained instore, was given a free bottle of wine of his choice. (He didn't ask, was just offered - no receipt was shown or anything).

daysoftheweek · 12/03/2010 02:00

happened to me in the shop

offer included some veg
so I picked it up off the shelf where they had put it

charged full price

it was same veg, same size packet but not marked meal deal on the plastic!!!

like most on here the woman serving me was really pissy about it (they always are in our local)

Bodenbabe · 14/03/2010 19:49

Cycnical I know, but I'm sure they do this deliberately - almost every time I order meal deal online they have to substitute one of the items and then try to charge me for the whole thing.

re5earcher · 09/07/2010 11:32

Hi there, I'm a researcher for Rip Off Britain and I'm looking for people who have had problems with supermarket deliveries - substitutions that end up costing more or food delivered close to its sell by date. If you have any experiences of this, please give me an email at [email protected].
Many thanks

KnickKnack · 09/07/2010 21:58

re5earcher, I think you need to repost this in the media section and pay the free

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/07/2010 22:00

Yes, I agree!

Do that re5earcher and I'll happily talk to you!
