I was considering it myself but another thread somewhere below says it is awful - next to an abbatoir in a really depressing town. Maybe Sundrum Castle would be a better bet? We chose Auchenlarie in the end and apparently that is really nice. Hope this helps

amazonianadventure · 16/01/2009 21:22

yeah dont go!! I live not far, theres really not much around the area ei.

ther

Sundrum would be better, its in a rural setting about 10 mins from a town and beach, national trust castle and park nearby.Airports not far either if you wanted to fly (dont know why i suggested that)

hth

i dont know about that one but we went to park resorts sandy bay last year and it was horrific - we didnt stay . Is sundrum castle a park resorts resort? Parkdean resorts look nicer....

Hi
Went to Sandylands last April in a big family group and it is OK but only if you use it only as a base. It is basically like a large field with a train track very close by (which my train mad DS loved....)The beach is over the track and not so nice; the town is a bit run down but they had some fun little shows and a go kart track but not much else (supermarkets in town too). Only there for a midweek and in a big group so that made it ok maybe. Went to Wemyss Bay and that was very nice. Again nothing in Wemyss Bay (it is a train terminus for fery to Bute) but it was a lovely park, we had views over the Clyde and swimming pool was nice though Chippie was shut midweek even though it was May
You can also travel easily to Largs (5 mins) or even over to Rothesay.
Hope you have a nice time!

BexieID · 18/01/2009 22:49

I only have a 2 minute walk to view the Clyde from my flat, so hope I don't get Wemyss bay either, lol. The only good thing would be going past a great big Tesco to stock up! What supermarket is near Sandylands?

mammy2G · 21/01/2009 18:56

Hi - sorry not been on - there is a large Safeways or Morrisons outside the town (Saltcoats ) at roundabout (and a MacDonalds too ) see google map
maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=saltcoats&ie=UTF8&split=0&t=h&ll=55.639043,-4.750128&spn=0.0 33523,0.047379&z=14
if you zoom out from this you'll see the beachy bit where the caravans are behind - separated by the railway line.Erm, the google map jumps a bit, basically shop is at the roundabout end of Kilwinning road - white roofs, just move map to right a bit.

In town there was also a smaller supermarket - can't remember which one though, sorry.

mammy2G · 21/01/2009 19:02

Unjumpy map
maps.google.co.uk/maps?g=saltcoats&sll=55.641425,-4.791043&sspn=0.134083,0.189514&ie=UTF8&ll=55.6360 87,-4.751329&spn=0.033525,0.047379&t=h&z=14
Supermarket at top right, caravans at bottom left

mumofdjandbabies · 22/01/2009 13:28

BexieID · 08/02/2009 22:44

We're off to Havens Seton Sands the last weekend of April.

mammy2G · 09/02/2009 21:45

Hey BexieID - sounds nice , can you let us know how it is after, as I have been thinking of booking there for a short break? I'm over on west coast scotland now but lived in Edinburgh for 17 years but never managed to go there. And loads to do in Edinburgh which is very close (there's a bus too).
Have fun!

BexieID · 10/02/2009 00:07

I'm west of Glasgow!

gscrym · 10/02/2009 03:42

Oh crap, I'm going to Sandylands for the May weekend. Am not looking forward to it now. Suppose if it's awful, we can come home.

mammy2G · 10/02/2009 11:54

hey! I'm Glasgow itself

Don't despair Sandylands really, the whole coast area is lovely - I didn't go to this particular beach but a friend found this lovely one near Saltcoats - on road to Portencross, follow path (between the golf course and field) down to beach.

Also we went to loads little beaches around there too - have fun
