Hello Fresh - worth a try?

AhhhThereWeAreThen · 28/01/2024 10:16

In a bid to mix up our household menus, I'm thinking of giving them a try - household of 3 adults. What are the recipies like - any favourites worth a try?

Also any discount codes anywhere?

I have tried them both and they were ok but without making a conscious decision I just stopped sending for them. What I liked most about them was getting the correct amount of herbs, spices, pastes etc with no wastage. For that reason I’m going to have a look at Simply Cook as they send those items out and you buy the main ingredients for the meal. At the moment I have a cupboard full of herbs and spices nearing their use by date which I’ve bought for recipes I’ve tried in the past and never used again.

You don’t have to be at home for Simply Cook deliveries as they are posted and go through the letter box.

HalliwellManor · 28/01/2024 12:05

Simply Cook had a range of kits in Asda last week, the 3 spice pot kits for £1.25 each if you fancy trying something different, you just buy the rest of the ingredients yourself.
I had a Guosto delivery yesterday as my sister sent me a code for 70% off,we had 5 meals for 2 people for £13.Ive cancelled the subscription though as I only wanted it for the discounted price,I'd never pay full price for what we had.

PossumintheHouse · 28/01/2024 12:15

Nope, they’ll leave it in a safe space, at your own risk.

PossumintheHouse · 28/01/2024 12:18

On the back of this thread, I’ve just signed up again with a 65% discount code, out of curiosity.
We’ve ordered six meals for two people, discount cost is £20 including delivery.
Looking at the recipes, they definitely seem to be less generous/of lesser quality than three years ago. Infuriating amount of meals with extra costs attached, but I didn’t bite. Let’s see, shall we… 🧐

I got hello fresh in Australia so I’m assuming it’s the same deal. There were a few things I disliked, first thing being that the recipes were often too fiddly, I was too tired to quickly toast some almonds for example, and didn’t have the bandwidth to be whipping up a sauce while something else was on the stovetop, while trying to read the small print. Second thing was that I couldn’t seem to reorder the same recipe boxes, so I wasn’t able to reorder favourites, which meant I never learnt how to do several recipes thru repetition.
I ended up with a fridge full of ingredients I was too tired to use.
I will say though, that every single meal that I did bother to cook ended up tasting great.

HRTQueen · 28/01/2024 12:50

I found it ok but they could make the meals easier to cook

I used it to help ds cook and from this have made the recipes simpler to cook

CupcakeCat · 28/01/2024 12:54

I've been doing Gousto for about 12 weeks now and love it. Big portions, huge choice (100 a week), only had 1 missing ingredient in all the time.

Recommend 100%

FestiveAuntFanny · 28/01/2024 12:54

We tried Hello Fresh, small portions, not good quality ingredients, heaps of packaging. If you are a remotely competent cook they are a waste of time and money.

Kids hated it and we still threaten joke them with getting it back if they complain about the food!

Chloebella · 28/01/2024 12:54

It’s a rip off. Just follow simple recipes of health websites or Instagram and freeze food if you cook too much.

AhBiscuits · 28/01/2024 12:58

I use Simply Cook. It's only £10 for a box of 4 meals. You don't get the ingredients though. You get a recipe card and all flavourings, herbs and stock. You buy your own ingredients. I prefer it as I can choose different veg or cuts of meat if I prefer them. It has helped with my food rut.

Tiny portions. Two pieces of sprouting brocolli for two people!

TheCadoganArms · 28/01/2024 13:00

Tried Hello Fresh a few years ago and thought the amount of packaging waste was insane. The recipes were dumbed to Fisher Price level and the portions small.

LivMumsnet · 28/01/2024 13:17

Afternoon all - we've now moved this over to our Promo codes topic. Thanks. Smile

You should probably feel lucky there was some veg involved at all. 😆

I think often the recipes fall into the gap between simple enough for people who can’t cook and are hoping to learn and irritating for someone who can cook but cannot be arsed with shopping.

I suspect it is quite hard to get it right for the various possible audiences.

I do think a lot of the recipes and the customer experience could be improved if the kits came with wee bags of chopped base mix (which would vary by recipe). The recipes obviously miss this out because the chopping up onion and stuff adds faff (and steps). But without it the results can be really bland.

Similarly, screw peeling and chopping up the single clove of garlic that comes with loads of the recipes. They can whack that in with the base. I have a big jar of garlic puree and, if I’ve decided to do hello fresh, I’m going to take the shortcut!

The amount of packaging is insane though. All the stupid wee sachets of stuff.

Copperoliverbear · 28/01/2024 23:05

Gousto is better

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 28/01/2024 23:43

Gousto is better slightly, but HF is good too. hF also do meals for 3 which is good. Gousto is only 2 or 4.

CornishPorsche · 29/01/2024 07:39

@DogsAreBetterThanHusbands they've updated the Gousto sizes in the last year or so for between 1-5 people.

Hello Fresh - worth a try?
AhhhThereWeAreThen · 29/01/2024 10:52

Thanks all.

So varying responses to consider.

I've gone with a trial week at SF.

Will see how that goes then maybe give Gousto a go after to compare.

Thanks, I may actually order from then again. It's been so long I bet they'll let me have a discount too!

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 30/01/2024 21:12

Gousto great but I would cancel A week but they would still take payment and not deliver. Very very infuriating.

Hello Fresh ok so far but everything seems to be Cajun or chipotle tasting. V boring choices compared to HF.

PossumintheHouse · 03/02/2024 17:31

First week back on Hello Fresh, arrived today. Everything was in there and looked fresh so… so far, so good.

They've sent me some promo codes so you can try them for 60% off a first box, then 25% off for 10 weeks. (So it’s a better deal than elsewhere online.)

If anyone wants a code, PM me. Full disclaimer: I also get a £10 voucher to share a code.

PossumintheHouse · 05/02/2024 15:55

Made a mistake on my last post… 🙄 I’ve actually got a couple of FREE Hello Fresh boxes to give away in addition to the above offer.

If anybody fancies giving it a try drop me a private message and I’ll give you a code.

Unfortunately All three recipes we tried this week were really, in our opinion, quite awful

What recipes did you try?

(I have tried several hello fresh recipes I thought were terrible too. I’m not a fan).
