Ibstock Place School 7+ entry: Honest experiences on Pastoral Care & School Culture for a quiet child?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently making a big decision for my son, who is aiming for 7+ entry next year. He is currently in a state school, extremely bright and talented, but also quite sensitive, quiet, and gentle. Finding a school with genuine, exceptional pastoral care is my absolute top priority.
We visited Ibstock Place School recently, and while the facilities are impressive, I came away with some reservations and would love to hear honest, direct experiences from current or past parents.

During our visit:

• The overall feel was quite corporate and staged rather than warm or personal. The children seemed very rehearsed for the show/tour.
• The Head teacher barely spoke during the presentation.
• When a parent raised a question about bullying, the response given was that "bullying simply doesn't happen here," which felt unrealistic and alarming rather than reassuring.

Moving my son from a happy state school into the independent sector is a huge emotional and financial commitment. Given him quiet and sensitive nature, I am very worried about his getting lost in the crowd or feeling isolated if the culture leans too heavily towards corporate pressure and lacks warm pastoral care. Could anyone with direct, first-hand experience share what the day-to-day culture at Ibstock Place is truly like? How does the school actually handle quiet/sensitive children and pastoral issues when they arise? Is the environment nurturing, or does it feel cold and high-pressured? I would be so grateful for any insights—positive or negative! Thank you so much.

I worked there for a few years recently - the Head may seem distant, but the school is nurturing. (When my own DC were school age, the school had a reputation locally for being for ‘rich, thick kids’ but the then headmistress changed it radically, improving it in every way).
If you are local, I would absolutely go for it.
If I had grandkids now, I would pay the fees for them to go there.

I’d be so grateful if parents who currently have younger children in the primary/prep section could share their perspectives as well. I'd love to know what the atmosphere is like day-to-day—is it a warm, kind, and genuinely caring environment with strong pastoral support?
I have no doubt about its academic strength, but I’ve heard that the previous headmistress was extremely strict and created a somewhat high-pressure, hothouse environment for the kids. I'd love to hear how parents feel about the overall vibe now.

I would never trust a school that says they have no bullying.
There are many local Preps with spaces in the areas near Ibstock. I’d go with one of those instead.

I do agree! It smell a rat:) which school near by you recommend with better reputation of both nurturing and academic.

It depends where you live really. Richmond, Putney, Kingston etc . Go for somewhere you can walk to!
