Are you referring to Alan Bird, the head at City of London Boys' being appointed head at Magdalen College School? That was only announced this week. City of London School haven't even yet advertised for a successor - though I imagine they will do in the next few weeks.

Seeing as you bump many old threads on City of London School you clearly mean this. The head’s departure in June 2027 was announced to parents yesterday afternoon. The chair of governors has advised recruitment is underway via a suitable exec agency.

Any secondary school with an ambitious head there is a good chance they will move on to something else within the seven years you’re looking at. Alan Bird has been there nearly 10 years so him wanting a new challenge shouldn’t be a huge shock. Schools like CLS will have no shortage of good candidates and are much, much more than one person.

Apply or don’t apply, all the same to me. But it is likely a new head will be appointed prior to offer holder events in Feb.

SLT typically need to give two full terms notice when leaving a school so an incoming head would need to give notice to their current school by New Year if they're to be in position at CLS by September 2027.

When a head announces they’re leaving, the governors may already have an internal successor in mind—such as the deputy head or another senior leader.
They may still run a formal recruitment process for governance and fairness, but the internal candidate can have a strong advantage because they already know the school, staff and families. However, until the governors formally announce the appointment, it isn’t guaranteed; sometimes an external candidate performs better or the preferred internal person withdraws.

YABU For posting about City with no further information as if everyone else should know what school you’re talking about. There’s another City.. and probably several more outside London!

secondly no thoughts on this specific head himself, but considering after next Sept the sixth form is going coed with the girls school’s and is relocating- it’s a pretty rubbish time to lose a Head for the existing parents in the secondary school who will not want the distraction of these two changes at once.

I also think it’s a real shame that they couldn’t maintain single sex sixth forms, but that’s for another thread.

Not sure what’s not fully co-ed at sixth form about this? There isn’t another single sex sixth form building being maintained elsewhere for each school- it is there? Current arrangements are temporary.

The future from 2027 is being promoted as ‘‘co-educational learning and collaboration’ at 6th form level in the new shared building.
