Has anyone got any recent experience of applying for bursaries to private schools in Stockport? We have a very clever little boy and really want to do our best for him, school wise, but have no money to spend on fees. Any body got any advice?

I work in this area. You’ll only get a bursary if you’re on a very low income ie benefits or minimum wage. MGS and St Bede’s offer a bursary at a similar level. If you’re just skint middle class then no. Best thing you can do is send them to a decent state secondary and boost their education from home (activities, tuition etc). Some of the teaching at those schools is not great anyway. It’s more that the behaviour is good from students generally.

Oh god that's depressing, we've had terrible luck with picking schools. Was hoping his cleverness would lead to a miracle.

No. Sorry. But you’re acting like state schools are the end of the world. There are some great state schools in the area. Cheadle Hulme (the high school, not the private school) is great. Personally, we moved to Trafford for the grammars.

There are bursaries from Y3 onwards at Lady Barn

How much do you earn as a household? All the schools are pretty open I think about their ‘cut off level’ for support. But yes, it’s generally very low…. Each school is different. Are your state schools really poor or ok? Bursaries very competitive of course and not many of them so I think whatever you decide a state back up is essential. How old is your son?
