We are moving to North London and looking at indie schools - there has been another thread about private schools at risk of closing. Has anyone heard anything about schools in North London potentially closing?

On Feb 2026 the Court of Appeal dismissed appeal in case concerning VAT on private school fees

In N London it's likely that falling birth rate is much more impactful than VAT. Not only fewer places needed but more choice for parents in the state sector. In many parts of N London you can take your pick of state primaries, few are now oversubscribed.

Hmm, in Camden 25 out of 38 primaries last year were decided on distance, i.e. were oversubscribed. You aren't going to walk into the most popular schools like Eleanor Palmer or Hampstead Parochial. There are lots of undersubscribed schools it's true, but they aren't schools that are particularly desirable.

Yes, the good state primaries are still oversubscribed, but much easier to get into. For example, our primary (a church school) - when we applied for my oldest, if you weren’t a sibling, LAC or child of staff some pretty industrial strength churchgoing was required to get a place - only one or two kids per year got in based on distance with last offered distance being a few doors down from the school. Now, it’s still oversubscribed and with a waiting list but people get in on the distance criterion from much further away. Two schools in our borough closed in the last couple of years due to falling demand.
