Cargo bike for school run in South Ken?

Is it true that many kids are dropped off in Porsche by housekeepers?
If I choose to send my little one to Glendower or Falkner, will I stand out as a poor family by using a cargo bike, as commonly seen elsewhere.

I myself don't mind being seen as poor by other families, but I don't want my little one to be embarrassed by our low economic status.

😂😂😂 try unicycles instead

Who cares what anyone else thinks? I’d hazard that your main concern is making your kid aware that you’re not “low socioeconomic status” if you’re paying to attend Glendower or Falkner House, no matter how you travel there.

Cargo bikes are great, but tend to be the preserve of the better off. Very often users have a huge car at home, and just use the bike for the school run and to the park in a show offey way.

deanstreet · 24/01/2026 22:16

@billiongulls I lock my cargo bike outside on the street
@Dontbeasillysausage I am certainly in the low socioeconomic status within that parent community, but I will tell my kid it doesn't matter at all

I don’t think any of the parents care but you clearly do as you are asking the question.

And no they are not dropped off by the housekeeper in a fancy Porsche. Most of the most wealthy ones are dropped off and picked up by their nanny so aren’t around to see this and judge.

You'll just have to upgrade to an Urban Arrow bike. Round here that's what the truely posh drive. It makes it clear you live in the neighbourhood too. Driving you could come from anywhere, shudder.

comical to think of urban arrows as posh - check out how widely they are used in Amsterdam

deanstreet · 26/01/2026 09:31

Urban Arrows are too small and I don't think the cargo parts can be covered by a canopy

They're derided as the upper middle class posh option, normally badly ridden and selfishly parked ;) They're such a status symbol they're uninsurable. You need a take away flat white to go with it. You'll only see them in certain neighbourhoods in Amsterdam, mostly equivalent to South Ken.

Most of the families with nannies here have upgraded to long tail bikes in the last 2 years. They're safer and more practical.

belladonna22 · 26/01/2026 13:32

I take my kids to prep school on a long tail bike - no better feeling than whizzing past all the luxury SUVs stuck queuing in traffic! There are a few other parents who cycle as well. If people want to make a judgment about our income/wealth based on the fact that we cycle, I could not care less. I’m happy, kids are happy - that’s all that matters.

There are lots in the Netherlands but they are not the cheap option. That and Lowens are probably the posh brands. But Amsterdam is expensive to live in and a lot with have the urban arrow instead of a car so will be willing to spend on it
