Sport Scholarship for National/British Champion

Sula1978 · 03/01/2026 19:10

My son has been British Champion and National Champion for 4 years running, in rowing. He is predicted 10 x 7's at GCSE and is also a great cricketer. He is keen to gain a 6th form scholarship at a private school which would help him progress in his favourite sport. Any help on where we start would be appreciated.

If you google 6th form rowing scholarship, lots come up. Maybe also look at which schools in his discipline regularly qualify for Henley ?

this article has a list that it suggests are the top independent schools for rowing : https://www.independenteducationconsultants.co.uk/rowing-boarding-school-advice

then hopefully some posters will have first hand info on the schools that you’d consider from that list ?

Millfield?

Millfield is the best known sport focused private school - if rowing in particular though, the article may be better but they might require better academics than Millfield. Best to ask the school directly.

Try Shiplake. They offer full scholarships for rowing. The London schools that are big at rowing would probably require higher GCSEs.

You're best off having a Google for 6th forms who have rowing as an option then approaching them direct once you've looked at the fees. Don't assume you'll get a full scholarship based on your sons titles, he wont be a celebrity necessarily but one of few or many with a title.
For example Millfield is good for some sports but not all and their academics dont hit the top scorers yearly.

My child is firmly within the top 3 Nationally and Internationally and didn't achieve a sports scholarship at their favoured school although was offered full scholarships at other schools.

Is your son already at private school?
