Culture at Loughborough Grammar School

DS is due to start secondary school in September 2026, we are currently looking at options in Leicestershire/Rutland. Loughborough GS seems like a good option but how is the culture there? DS is not particularly sporty and I'm afraid he'll be ostracised as a result. Is there a big rugby/laddish 'alpha male' culture there? Also slightly concerned with the fact the school has gone through 5 heads in 5 years.

The concern about not being sporty is unnecessary. Neither of my sons are/were sporty and nobody cares one bit. By year 10 the vast majority don’t play competitive sport.

The issue of many heads is a very valid one. As a current parent I honestly couldn’t tell you if the latest one (in post since February) is any better or will actually follow through on the changes he talks about. They all say the right things and make lots of promises when they start!

The school wasn’t great for my older son, and I wished we’d sent him elsewhere, but has been mostly good for my younger one. I’m not sure I would recommend it unless your child is musical or sporty or has a niche interest that can’t be met elsewhere.

No laddish culture that I’m aware of (possibly true 5 heads ago?) and I would except the school to go coeducational in the next few years too. There are moves towards it already, and school fee increases are likely to force it in my opinion.

Checked their bus serviced but unfortunately do not think they provide buses to our location. Ratcliffe also came on our radar and so did Stamford.
