Hello,

I am looking for recommendations for a good private primary school near me for my 4 year old daughter and would appreciate any help.

we have been to see KES prep, Embley, Sherborne and St Swithuns, however, can’t make a decision.

we are new to the area and therefore, don’t have friends or family who can advise.

thank you

KES is very well regarded. St Swithun’s senior school is good but the junior school is no great shakes. You haven’t mentioned Princes Mead, which I understand is v gd. I used to live in the area and all the senior people at my work sent their kids to Princes Mead and seemed happy with it

BWQ533 · 15/04/2025 07:49

Thank you for your reply. Princes Mead is a bit too far for us, especially as the school bus won’t come to us (in Hiltingbury, Eastleigh). We liked KES but the freezing outdoor swimming pool put us off!

Have you looked at Twyford Prep? (I was at Prince's Mead, but when it used to be in Winchester - lovely school, but fair enough if the logistics don't work.)

From Hiltingbury Sherborne probably makes the most sense. Friends’ children have been very happy there (although left a couple of years ago now).

BWQ533 · 15/04/2025 08:17

Thank you, does anyone have any experience with KES prep?

Are you able to share with me what happened? We are in the process of applying
DM if more appropriate.
Thanks

I’ve not heard of anyone leaving either KESprep or KES for embley. Also not heard any criticisms of the pastoral care at KES. I have 3 children in schools locally so know a lot of parents with kids at various schools.

Twyford is the other I’d add to your list for prep schools.

Embley has lovely grounds but generally isn’t considered as academic as KES and isn’t as competitive at sport at secondary level, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing! St Swithuns is single sex so different from all the others and has a reputation locally as being full of highly strung and anxious girls but I have no idea if that’s true as I don’t know anyone who goes there.

Mine are all older and went to state primary but if I were choosing a prep from where you are I’d choose between Embley, KES prep and Twyford.

Thank you @Goosebynature , I appreciate you taking the time to reply. KES prep is now top of our list (although the cold outdoor pool is putting me off!). Also going to see Prince’s mead tomorrow, as if we love it, may need to work out how to travel for it!

Hi, Cherrycherriess, please would you be able to let me have more info as we are considering a move to KES

Another vote here for PM (nb they have just announced a merger with KES)

Hi,

can I ask if you like PM, why you are thinking of moving to KES?

Sorry, good question!

My kids are now at state senior school and we are considering moving them in yr9.

Your statement is inaccurate and I would highly recommend you think about being respectful and fact find before making such statements

SchoolsMum · 30/09/2025 12:15

Happy to help with this thread as know these schools well - probably easier to PM me!

southchinasea · 30/09/2025 12:50

I'd choose KES prep. I definitely wouldn't pick Sherborne. St Swithun's Junior is also lovely but a bit further from you probably?
