Occasional spaces - Surrey independent secondaries

Does anyone have any tips on when is likely a good time to enquire whether there may be an occasional space for a year 9 child for independents in the area? Would it be before the autumn of the year before proposed starting or as late as spring before the new academic year, dependent on perhaps current students’ notices being handed in??
TIA

After Easter, when a term’s notice of leaving or not taking up a place is due. However they may have a waiting list already if y9 is an entry point. Do you have particular schools in mind?

But if you want year 9 entry and have the year in hand could you apply in the preceding Autumn for 13+? Not all schools allocate year 9 by deferred entry/CE.

Thank you! Reeds and Halliford are appealing .. moving from overseas.

Thank you! I am sorry to hear about your dd’s school. Exams no issue for my dc.

I would just phone the schools & ask.

Emanuel will be running a selection process in May for a handful of occasional places coming up in Y8, Y9 and Y10 this September. They circulated their mailing list this afternoon.

Enquiries to [email protected]

Dangerous to wait for Easter I think. I know of two well-known indies in North London which have already offered occasional places for this September in the last couple of weeks, and kept a waiting list in case any more arise.

Sounds like the best course of action is to make enquiries as it is all ad hoc. I don’t really want to put my dc through a very fierce competitive process, so prefer to target schools where it’s realistic to have a chance of getting in. Though would like a school where there is a decent STEM programme as already that is the area of interest and natural ability.

Get ringing round now!!
i moved my child for year 9 and sent emails to the admissions departments of all the schools we liked the look of. Those that had placed invited us to sit and were quick to give us the results so we could give our notice at the current school before the start of the summer term . The downside is they may want to see you very quickly so get prepping

I think quite a few schools will have places....if you are bit flexible you might be pleasantly surprised. My daughter missed the Jan assessment period for a school, but when we enquired about places they set up an assessment day a couple of weeks later for her, and she got in! Not all schools are fiercely competitive to get into, and many present themselves as far more selective than they actually are. They all want to be full!
