Thinking of Stowe for my daughter -currently in Year 6..and Swanbourne or Winchester House before this.

She is willing to get stuck in and works hard but is also sensitive and not super sporty. Would be AMAZING to get some honest opinions about the school currently. Are the kids happy, kind?

Thank you so much!

I have a few friends who were there many years ago. It was notorious for drugs then... probably not the case anymore.

TossedSaladandSE · 19/10/2024 14:27

They're all notorious for drugs

Nothing changes

OP I'd stick this on the Boarding School board if were you. This is a bit of a quiet one.

Would not touch stowe with a barge poll. Major creep of a headmaster shudders

I have known dozens of children at Stowe over the last many years. Huge range of children in terms of abilities, interests and personalities. They all seem to find their niche and nearly all have been very happy and successful there. I don't think it's the absolute best of the best by any means but it's a very good school and turns out some delightful and very well rounded young people.

Similar story for both Swanbourne House and Winchester House. WHS perhaps a bit more traditionally academic and SHS more of an all round/holistic school. You get a discount at Stowe if you attend either of the preps for 2 years plus.

Not ture at Stowe. Our kids are there in 3rd and 4th form and the drugs of choice are Vaping and Snus (very new craze). It is repressed by the school as far as they can without making the place into a concentration camp. If caught they will be suspended. As yet they have seen or heard of nothing more.

Not true. Dr Wallersteiner is generally considered by staff, pupils and parents to be an extraordinary individual and has done a fantastic job during the last 20 years.

Stowe is VERY sporty, but having said that there are loads of kids there who arent at all sporty. She will have to do some sport though. You will fidn she will get very fit.

By some parents perhaps but certainly not by pupils and staff!

The pupils generally him but he's scary. He's scary cos he is the head, who will walk up to random kids and start having a conversation with them - which of course a young kid could find intimidating. On top of that he is 6'3" which doesn't help. I am sure though that as for the staff - he is very respected having turned the school round over the last 20 years. As for the staff not liking / respecting him - what evidence? If that were the case I'd expect a high turnover of staff.

Exactly! Look at the turnover of staff year on year. The staff room completely changes every 3 years!

Stowe is full of such a diverse range of kids to be honest. My friends from there are nice and had a great time but have noticed since leaving school and uni the hard hitting reality of the competitive nature of the world has hit them all a bit and some have said to me directly they wouldn't send their kids to Stowe. They all had a great time though and didn't have any issues socially. Sounds like she could fit in and have a good time but if she is ambitious maybe not the best place. Good luck

Rustygecko · 05/12/2024 10:20

“…..but if she is ambitious maybe not the best place.”

in what sense?

easternenergizer · 05/12/2024 13:16

In the sense that there are other schools that are harder working.

a few examples?

easternenergizer · 06/12/2024 00:52

Oundle, Rugby, Marlborough, St Edwards, Bradfield.

easternenergizer · 06/12/2024 00:53

to give a few

Bedsmum66 · 06/12/2024 12:06

Can I suggest thst reports from school friends are likely to be out of date! The school has changed a lot in last 10 years. Comparing to schools like oundle and Marlborough is also not that helpful as they take a far larger proportion of very academic children than Stowe. Kids thst are in higher sets at Stowe (and there are 8 sets I think for core subjects) do well, as do other kids that are minded to work.
