and some children will be way behind

Well my ds2 is in Yr1 and on level 4 and I really don't give a flying fig what other children are on to be honest.

Their reading develops at such different rates, I really wouldn't be worried.

According to the OUP guide, level 6 is indicated for age 6-7.

Feenie · 09/07/2010 20:36

Nope, perfectly reasonable on entry to Y2.

Level 6 is definately nothing to be worried about. Level 5 is the 'expected' level according to the ORT website.

DD's on level 6, and it does seem low compared to what some people talk about on here ... but I had a look at a level 9 book her friend's brother had brought home in Year 2, and she would be able to read it, without a doubt. She's also supposed to be at the top end of what they should be achieving ... I think some schools just take it easier than others.

Level 6 sounds just fine, don't worry.

They all develop their reading at different rates, and the most important thing is not the level, more developing a love of reading and also his comprehension. Its no good being on Level 20 million if you don't understand any of it.

If I were you, I wouldn't enter into discussions with other mums about reading levels. Therein lies madness.

I know i am more than happy he is a well behaved popular gentle little boy who enjoys life and is very confident.

DS1 has just finished Y1 and is confidently reading ORT level 5, probably just ready to start with level 6, and I am not worried at all He is a summer born so only just about to turn six, is enjoying his reading, and to me that is the most important thing.

I would also agree with taffetacatski - don't ever ask about another child's reading levels Some children will be on higher levels because reading has just 'clicked' for them earlier than others; others will be on higher levels because the school sends home three or four reading books per week so the children get through the schemes more quickly.

To be honest I would far rather have a child on level 4/5/6 and enjoying it, than have them on level 10/11/12 and finding reading a chore or, worse still, feeling pressurised.

op - he sounds lovely

He will be fine, but don't let him regress over the summer holidays - your local library will have a reading quest or similar going on.
