what would you consider to be average for writing at end of reception in terms of spelling, letter formation, punctuation etc. Just wondered as my ds is in a mixed year 1/ reception class and i haven't had a chance to see other reception childrens writing as year 1 work is always displayed in class, not the reception childrens.

At this point in the year I would expect most reception children to be able to write one or two sentences with letters mainly formed correctly and while some words may be spelt phonetically they should be easily deciphered by anyone. I would also expect some children to be writing much more than this and I would certainly expect it to be displayed alongside the Y1 children's work. Any reason given why it isn't?

Having a look round the my son's reception classroom I would say it is very mixed. Some children's writing is barely legible- big letters; mixed sizes; some incorrectly formed or backwards etc. Some children's work(usually but not exclusively the girls) was much further advanced- lots more text; small and evenly spaced; correctly formed etc. I would imagine it is all within the bounds of normal with average being somewhere in the middle.

I get the feeling the teacher likes to give the impression that her class is all doing well so would only display the 'best' work for other staff and the head to see.

Showing where the children started and how they have progressed to the end of Y1 would be more effective ... I would question that if I saw it in any of our classes as literacy coordinator
