Anyone else feel very sad when the end of the summer term approaches

Hi, I've got 3 dc who are in nursery, year 1 and year 3 at the moment. As usual as the end of year approaches I start to feel very sad to the point that I spend the last week of term with a constant pain in my belly. Sad about them having different teachers next year mainly I suppose... I don't like most "endings" in general so I suppose that is part of it. In addition this year will be the last year that I have any child in nursery and the staff there are lovely - it is hard to feel as involved with what is going on in the other years as you spend much less time (in reception) and then no time (from year 1 onwards) in the classroom. Anyone else relate to feeling sad and nostalgic in advance....

Gosh no - I just feel relief that it is all over and we can relax and do what we really enjoy for a while!

i feel reliet too....

a little sad,but my eldest has just finished school,finished gcses and turned 16...all in a week! so can empathise

I can't say I do (sorry).

I feel like school completely dominates and dictates my life, and when the holidays come I just feel an enormous sense of relief that I can do as I please with my children.

I can understand what you're saying, the children are another year older, they have to start afresh, new friends etc.

but at the same time I am relishing spending some lovely quality time with my DD, so am approaching the end of term with a smile, but will start getting worried in August.

I get that sad and nostalgic feeling - DS just finishing Reception year and its amazing how hes grown and changed since his first day at school.

DD still has another year at nursery thank goodness as I will be a total blubbery wreck when she finishes there!

I think part of the reason with me is that I like the social contact that going to school every day provides and of course that drops off massively in the summer. Plus relationship with dh not always great and is harder when I don't have the outlet of seeing other adults so much. Suppose should concentrate more on all the nice things that I too can do with my dc! Anyway, glad to see that I am not the only nostalgic kind of person around RiverofSleep and a couple of others... at the same time everyone else has made me realise that may be I should be planning our summer rather than feeling bad about a year that hasn't ended yet.
My middle dd for example has had a really really nice teacher this year who has helped her gain a lot of confidence, so I really want to convey that to this teacher, once I have done that though saying goodbye should be fine and in any case her relationship is really with dd, not me...

Marsha - each year goes so much faster than the last. A couple of weeks ago I suddenly remembered that I had taken DD to have lunch with DP on the first day of school last September - the memory felt like yesterday

I feel a bit panicked when I think of the whole summer stretching ahead with an easily bored DS. This year I am a little sad though as we are moving over the summer so DS will be leaving his school for good at the end of term. They've been really lovely, I just hope he enjoys his next school as much as this one.

I know so fast. Plus it's a pre-prep so he only has two more years there. Eek!

My DD is leaving primary this year so yes, I feel sad. I must admit that I found it very hard when my LOs left nursery too.

It brings it home just how fast time slips by - it seems yesterday that my eldest started primary - I remember his first visit - and now he's in Yr8.

Just one DC in primary after this and that will fly past.

Yes it's true that the years seem to go faster and faster and also now I measure time in academic years rather than real years, and somehow the holidays seem to get sucked into a different kind of time and so it seems that even though I am going to be 42 next January which is quite a long time away really, it is going to get here really really quickly. In terms of kids I think the years when they are 4, 5, 6 and 7 are lovely years, not that my eldest who is now 8 is not lovely but rather more lippy than he used to be.... So in that sense time passing also means that the age when they say lots of funny things will also pass.

Gosh, in the time I wrote that message loads of other posts appeared! What is it about nursery
OrmRenewed... I suppose that it's such an innocent time and even though at 4 and a half in september I am not sure if dd will really be ready for full time school, I suppose it will have to happen, and I will lose my last little companion at home (not that I am being selfish!!!!!)

DS is finishing reception- crikey he only started a few weeks back!! (or so it seems) and now he is a whole year older... Sniff ... My baby all grown up, and knowing I wont have this again depresses me

Oh yes I always get sentimental and weepy (though there were a couple of unhappy school years when I thought 'thank god that's over'). My youngest leaves primary in 2 weeks so I will be a blubbing wreck. And I thought leaving playgroup and nursery were bad!

Selfishly for me, this will be a biggie emotionally as the end of primary really means the end of all the meeting and chatting to mums outside teh school, school fairs and events, shows - all the little things that have kept our lives so happy and full over the years.

Oh no, I see it as progression and something new for him to learn in the next year. I get more anxious actually as I only have one and am very conscious at the age of 8 that he would rather be doing something with other kids than me planning to fill the holidays for just us two.

Sadly I make the buying of new uniform and new shoes an exciting event

My ds had two auditions with schools for choristerships, he loves singing. We are both very sad that he was pipped at the post by another boy to whom I wish all the luck in the world.

My only reservation about taking him back to his old school is that he hasn't enjoyed it there at all because of bullying

Thanks Pixie! One of my friends has a ds same age as mine in Y6 at prep - he'll stay for another 2 years but his sister in Y4 will leave at end of Y6 (Y7 and 8 are boys only apparently). So she is just dreading the double departure in 2 yeas time.

Ds is sad to be leaving his friends. I'm happy though, he's going to a great secondary in September.

I do get that sad feeling.

Have spent most of this morning in tears as dd has just finished up at nursery and all the staff are just so lovely. not helped at all by the fact that ds2 isnt going to that nursery after the holidays.

dp and ds1 just think im slightly mad, as the slightest thing has set me off for the last couple of days!

Thats our hols started today so am sure that in a couple of weeks time ill be in tears as i want them back at school!!

I love the end of the summer term, I get that happy summer holiday lift to the spirits. I even find myself singing those "we break up we break down" songs rather too enthusiastically.

I did find it hard when we moved school twice and had to say goodbye to everyone and start at a new school, but that was mid-term both times and very different, at least when my dc do reach end of primary it'll be leaving with all their friends at the same time this time.
