Moving to Canterbury - Changing primary schools

Hi, we are moving to Canterbury in the summer and are about to complete on a property near what looks like a 'bad' primary school (poor scores and high mobility due to social housing and a nearby army base).

Our son is due to start year 4 next year (and our daughter is due to start reception in January - a bad time to move) and I wondered what are our options if we are only offered a place in the bad school?

There are other schools around, all within 1-2 miles. Can we appeal if we apply for some of the good schools and are told they are full? Is there anything to be done if we're told the bad school is all there is? Anyone been in a situation like this? Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
P
