Help! I don't understand the reading scheme!

DS was on Oxford University Press Songbirds Phonics books. He got up to stage 4 which is all I think they have at his school. He was finding them easy and reading much harder books at home. Now they have put him on Oxford Learning Tree stage 2 which seems easier to me. I don't really understand the schemes so I don't know if this is supposed to be an appropriate progression.

Part of me thinks it doesn't really matter because his reading is improving all the time and he reads loads of books at home that are more challenging. But part of me is a bit fed up that they aren't giving him books that challenge him at school. We literally read it once then back in the book bag for next week. He has just turned 5.

If they only have phonics based decodable books to stage four they could be using stage two books as the words he would encounter in ORT stage 4 would be beyond his ability ...

So would that make sense then? These new books seem much easier and I had a sneak peak at some higher level ones that seemed more up his street... but I'm no teacher!

The songbirds books were great, I miss them

Songbirds only have 2 more levels and Amazon have new stage 5 books from 1p! I bought sets from both Amazon and the Bookdepository for school as they were much cheaper than buying from the publisher.

ORT have also published additional titles in stages 1-4
