Year 1 Spellings

I have my daughter who is in year 1 and she got spellings for only 3 weeks only in the begginning of the Summer term and has not had anymore. So yesterday I asked the teacher how often children get their spellings changed , to which she replied that every fortnightly. I then asked her why my dd had only got a few of the spellings to which she had no answer for. What should I do?- Ask for the spellings she is suppose to have covered or complain to the headteacher.

It's spelt BEGINNING.

Sorry, I just can't help it on a thread about spelling...

Now write it out three times....

Spellings are a PITA, I would be very happy for my DS not to have them ...

when you say the teacher had no answer what do you mean - she thought your DD should have had spellings and didn't know why she hadn't? Rather than your DD wasn't having them for some particular reason?

In DS's class, the children are given their spelling sheet (different children have different words) and they are responsible for putting it in their book bags. If something like that operates at your school I could understand why the teacher wouldn't know why you hadn't had any home. But equally, your enquiry will have prompted her to check they do come home in future.

Conclusion - I'd leave it and see what happens. presumably the spellings are taught at school anyway, so it's not like she's totally missing out.

Ours don't have spellings that come home but they are tested weekly with spellings that conform to the 20 minutes phonics sessions they do daily. Could that be happening in your school?

I'd just ask for the spelling she hasn't had. I think it's an oversight and not quite serious enough yet for head to become involved; unless you think the teacher has done it on purpose?

I wouldn't worry spelling tests are a waste of effort most of the class who learnt the words won't remember them the day after the test.
