Reading levels AGAIN

DS2 has come home today saying that he is being moved from ORT Level 3 to ORT Level 10.

He is an avid reader at home, but this seems like an enormous jump! He can certainly read the Level 10 books, but will he have missed anything by skipping all of the levels? DS1 worked his way through them level by level.

DS2 is in Year 1 BTW, and has just turned 6.

Luck him and lucky you. if he can read them why worry. Many children complete all the levels in y1. What has he been doing for the last 2 years? He must have been bored witless if he was on the first 3 levels all that time.

I'm only worried that he might have missed something by missing out the levels!

I would imagine he has spent the last 2 years learning through play, just like all the other children in his class!

You've skipped all the Biff and Chip stories, don't complain!!

Seriously though, if you're concerned speak to his teacher. Maybe they just haven't listened to him read until today and have reassessed the children before they move up?

I'm not enormously concerned as I know he is capable of reading it, I am just suprised that they have let him skip so many levels when the same teacher made DS1 plod through them all one by one.

Possibly it is that they have re-assessed them before they move up to Year 1. It is normally the TA who listens to him read, so maybe the teacher has instead this time.

TBH a little less Biff and Chip is a blessing...

My son had a big jump too at six - from blue to white (whatever they are in levels). He spent quite a while on white and lime reading right through them after though. We missed out all Magic key, which i was quite looking forward to! But I certainly wouldn't worry about it.

I shouldn't worry, many children learn to read without following a reading scheme. Children are constantly learning, they read street signs, news print, menus, etc, my mother tells me the first book she ever read was the Water Babies and thats not on any reading scheme.

Another option is to ask the teacher to give you two books; one L4 and one L10 that way he is challenged and you don't feel as though he has missed out.
