Hello, sorry another boring question! Which colour book band would you expect a child to be on at the end of reception?

Yes, up here in Scotland it seems they work book by book - one per week, with 3 groups so it may be that ORT Level 4 is the top group for her class. The spellings she was bringing home were of the HIT and IT variety until they performed 2 reading tests on her to see she is actually well above the Primary 2 class.

Fortunately, Jessica is well ahead and was pretty much a free reader when she left her old school to move here. After a meeting with the school she mow works with children aged 7/8 for her reading and spellings. Not bad for a child of 5yrs old who isnt 6 until the end of July.

Complete culture shock is the scottish education system!

Surely Hully that's not what you'd expect. Some children will be at that level. IN DS1s class there are three at that level. But then there are also children on level 1.

At my DD's school most kids just read ORT 1 and ORT 2 in reception. DD one of best readers (now in year 1, on white) but started year 1 halfway through ORT2, like most of the class.

Chill out. I know kids who have left Y1 at White level but they hate reading - it has been pushed on them so much that they never have the opportunity to enjoy books. They do it because the teacher and their parents expect it.

Success in reading is not measured by book bands and ORT reading levels, imo it's measured by your child's developing love of books...and that is something a parent is perfectly placed to do and a teacher because of time limitations, will always struggle with.
