Ok another Sats (yr2) question

Just because I'm asking this doesn't mean I'm obsessing about Sats or anything, honestly.
Our school are doing them in a very low key way, which is great. DS said he'd done his reading task and I'm interested to know which he'd done (they sit either level 2 or 3 don't they?) He's an excellent reader (gone beyond lime books to free reading last term) but struggles with writing, so wondered if that might keep him back for reading task. All I could get out of him was that it was easy and the answer to the question of who was the narrator was Rosie... didn't want to question too much. Any ideas? Don't want to ask teacher as I worried she'll think I'm obsessing! thanks

I'm not even sure DD is doing hers. Another school doing them very low key which I am pleased about. She keeps coming home saying she had to do some work books and I'm guessing that was SATS. She seems to be enjoying them!

I believe the Level 3 reading task was about the netherlands and windmills.....

Do we get the results of our DCs SATS?

I think we get a teacher assessment at the end of the year, which will incorporate results but not single them out specifically - at least I think thats how they do it at our school. So hopefully if he's normally a level 3 reading but gets a 2b on sats day he'd be reported as a level 3 to me, as that is his general teacher assessed level.

At our school the bookbands are not directly related to SATs score.
My ds had finished lime level befor Christmas and is free reading but has been assesed as a level 2a. From what others have said on here I know he did the level 3 paper but his teacher told me needed to improve his comprehension quite a bit more to achieve a level 3, so not really sure why they give him a test for a level that despite how well he does, they will refuse to give him a level 3 through assessment.

Then again he absolutely loves reading and that is more reassuring than a level 3 to me.

You don't get the test or task results, only the teacher assessment. The class teacher's knowledge of what your child can do should far exceed anything they find out by giving them a test.

There are lots of very able readers with a good sight vocabulary and excellent decoding skills whose comprehension ability is still catching up.

Housefboys, sounds like your ds did the 2007 level 2 reading test, the first section is about a little girl called Rosie, your ds's teacher may also give your son the level 3 paper if she thinks the level 2 was too easy but this isn't very good practise, the children should only be given one paper to do based on the teachers assessment of your childs ability (DD has just done hers though and had to sit through both level 2 &3 in maths and literacy ) The results should be given along with the end of year report but you will be given the teachers assessment rather than the results from the sats papers.

Ah now DD came home yesterday and said that she and a couple of other children, but not everyone, had to do another workbook. What does that mean? Is this the level 3 one? Our school haven't told us anything about SATS and as I haven't been through it before I'm a bit clueless!

LauraNorder - sounds likely that your dd has just done the level 3-5 SATs test, as this was a similar situation for my own dd.

Apparently the 3-5 level had a non-fiction text about windmills and how they are used to grind flour to make bread and to generate electricity. The fiction text was called Katja the Windmill Cat.

I know this because my dd spilled all this information out to her grandparents.

The school play it low key an call it 'special work' - however, dd turned around and said "But really its SATs tests".

Asked DD what it was about and she has just told me one was about The Netherlands and the other about a windmill cat. Thanks for your help. I feel a bit clueless

Nope, treas, the paper you are talking about is a level 3 paper.

Level 3-5 papers are used to assess children in Y6, at the end of KS2.

Actually his teacher mentioned today that he was on 'grey' reading level books - what are these? thought it stopped at lime and he was just on library books now. She also said he'd been doing really well this week in his sats which is great, though still didn't dare ask about levels in case I sounded pushy!

Wow you lot get so much info from your dcs! I asked ds1 if he'd had to do any special work last week (having been instructed by school not to use the word test as they were not meant to be aware of this). He briefly glanced up from his book and said "yeah, SATs". I asked what he'd had to do and he said "dunno. Don't remember." (!)
