Out in the sticks or central

We are moving to UK from overseas after 6 years and have to fill in admissions application before we come home. This means that we have to choose an area and primary school blind! We like Winchester from visiting it before, but still don't know if best to live in central Winchester or outside - any advice greatly needed.

If we were to ask a rental agency to look at houses, which is the best area we should be looking at? Kings Worthy looks nice, but I am guessing as farther out, major commute, and not much in the way of local transport early in the morning!

Have chosen WInchester because most of family live in Southampton, so need to be close to them, otherwise would be going Kent way!
