Hi all!

New to this so please be nice to me! My son is in year 1 and his school read books with coloured stickers on. He has started on white stickered books. Just wondered if this is good progress or not as the other mums dont discuss things like this.

The important thing is whether he is making progress, ie can he read better now than at the start of the year?

If you are concerned then talk to his teacher.

No idea about the books - white stickers could mean anything and could indeed have been done by the school.

Thank goodness the mums don't discuss it! it's best avoided IME.

What colour was he reading before?

If it's book bands white is very much above average expectations for year one.

But as Clary said they might have their own system. It's a big IF.

Be glad the other mums don't discuss it - there's nothing so awful as getting the detail from some (very pushy) mother about exactly how well her child is doing, and exactly how badly every other child in the class is doing

Seriously, as Clary said, so long as he is progressing, it doesn't make much difference how that compares with a mythical "average" child - they all go at different speeds with some outpacing the others for a while, then being caught up again.

Hi, his last books had gold coloured stickers on them if that helps.

My dd1 is reading white (they have stickers on), she's in year 1 and is top in her class, i think there is one more level after white and then its free reader, so your ds is doing very well .

Sounds like book bands then, my comment about him reading well above Y1 average expectations stands.

However, children don't progress in nice straight lines up like the government would like them to do, so don't panic if he seems to slow or stop his progress at any point. It'll even out in the end.

it sounds like really good progress. White book band level is above average for Year 1. To get an idea of expected ages for book band, have a look here

Above average? Well you did the right thing not asking the other mums then.

I have a sort of friend who constantly talks about her own DD who is in DS's class and about how well she does at EVERYTHING!!!! She has even declared her DD to be G&T and said that she needed to talk to the teacher about "pushing" her DS!

All I do is agree and say what a marvel child is and how remarkable she is and how well she is doing and how much more advanced she is than others....... well, what else could I say???

I have no idea at all about the levels, but from what other posters say, it seems all to be on track!

PS... OP I am certainly NOT suggesting that you are a pushy mum that boasts about her child. I certainly hope I did not give that impression.
