...or am I kidding myself that we'll get a place at our preferred school that way? I think we must be at or near the top of the waiting list having missed out by 100 m or less.

If you are near the top of the waiting list at this stage you have a good chance of getting in. There are often movements right up to the start of the autumn term. It is not uncommon to find that some children never turn up - they've moved away or gone private and the parents haven't bothered to tell the school that they don't need the place any more.
