If we are to believe when applying for a nursery place at a school, there is no connection between the nursery and the reception class and therefore entry to reception is viewed completely seperately to your nursery place application, how can you obtain a place at the nursery on the basis that you have a sibling at the school?? Is there a link or not?? Is this grounds for appeal??

No this isn't grounds for appeal. The link in this case is one way only. The nursery is allowed to take into account a sibling at the school as grounds for admission. However, admission to a school nursery does not guarantee admission to the school.

Am I right in assuming you got into a school nursery but have been refused admission to Reception at that school?

If there are 30 children in each class in Reception any appeal will be heard under infant class size rules. This means your appeal should only succeed if the LA has made a mistake or acted unreasonably (for which you should read irrationally). If there are fewer than 30 in each class you have a better chance of success.

Reception is full (60 places), appeal is to be heard on 10th May, refusal on grounds of distance, we are 19th on a waiting list of 23. (2 appeals to go through as no allocation of place at school choices). Just grasping at straws as there seems to be no hope of winning unless we could move in the next few weeks!! The so called choice over which school your children attend does not apply in any school which is ovesubcribed - all goods schools are oversubscribed - therefore the distance rule is used - thus meaning you have no choice if you are not in the area of a good school, so whats changed from the previous system?

If this is your catchment school or the designated nearest school then I have a great deal of sympathy for you.
If however it is not then I have to ask why you did not make a choice for this.
In fact whilst politicans will repeatedly talk about choice, the choice you have is to list your preferences, not make a choice

Not my catchment school, school in area my other children are schooled and operates a three tier system. Catchment school operates a two tier system, I would have to move other children and that would get complicated transferring from a three tier system to a two tier system. Also catchment school not the best!! Now no places left at any other schools in area, so if you don't get in the school you want, you are left with the ones which are left and there is a reason they still have places, is this right!! So your choice goes from an outstanding school to a Grade 3 ofsteded school!!
