I have searched the internet and can't find any guidelines, anyone know a link to a site that mentions this??

Thanks so much!

There is no statutory requirement, although there are guidelines. KS1 recommends between 5 and 7 1/2 hours of literacy and around 3 3/4 hours of numeracy, KS2 is 5-7 1/2 and 4 1/4- 5 respectively
You can download the document from

it's called Designing and timetabling the primary curriculum

Thank you for the link. I couldn't find the bit on the number of hours, any idea what page it's on?

We're on the Education topic too!
It's Page 35 for KS1 ( it says 37/46 on the pdf)and Page 36 for KS2 ( 38/46) Both are in the Appendix ( just in case you check here first!)

three hours of numeracy a week?

well that explains a lot

I found it in appendix 1 - page 35

These are just suggestions, most schools aim for an hour of maths per day and at least that in English, certainly if you include guided reading, spellings, grammar, etc it all adds up. The problem is, there is too much to do and not enough time to do it in! There is nothing in the recommendations on MFL or PSHE or any of the 1001 other things we are meant to cover, we "get into trouble" if we don't do 2 hrs of PE, although the recommendation is still 1 1/4, it's no wonder we feel as if we are rushing from topic to topic!
