A question more for teachers really; Is it common at this time of year ie SATs looming to stop more able yr1's from going in to a yr2 class for some subjects so that the yr2 teachers can concentrate on just their classes and getting them through the tests?

That happened with my dd1s class that was a mix of year 1 and 2. She stopped learning in year 2 groups. Don't know how common it is though!

Usually it's more about getting used to the test. Making sure they know what is being asked of them etc. Usually this is the children's first experience of a formal test and some children can get freaked out by it. These tests aren't taken in test conditions but it's still different to normal class activities.
