As I have said. I've no idea how the uk school system works (we're very new to it). I have only just discovered my eldest is due to sit SATs he's 7(yr 2). Is it am exam? Can anybody tell me the implications of this for him? Should I be doing anything special with him for it? Many thanks for your help!

Basically its a few tests that they do over a week.

They practice in class so you don't need to do anything else.

The main ones are in Yr2 and Yr6.

From a cynical view point they are only for the schools and league tables

So it won't have implications re streaming for ds? Thank you

It depends on how the school works I suppose.

At my DCs school they do have "sets" for numeracy and "tables" for literacy. I presumed it was their general all round ability that put them there rather than their tests scores, maybe someone will come along with more knowledge soon.

SAT's in Year 2 are just a small part of the assessment the teacher will be doing throughout the year, few schools would base anything on them as they are just a snapshot picture ( and a not very good one!) of what happens on one day in one particular test. All the other assessment a teacher makes will de based on long term observations and judgements. The "tests" are pretty low key, a school can carry them out at any time, in small groups or whole classes as they see fit, children who are absent can take them when they get back. Most schools also practice before hand simply so the children know what they are doing!

Thank you all! Sounds like nothing to worry about..

Y2 SATs don't contribute to league tables and they don't have to take place in a single week. Basically they are used to support teacher assessment and are pretty low key.
There is a maths test in the form of a booklet
Spelling test
Reading - comprehension
A long and a shorter piece of writing
