Does anyone have any children at Darell and what do they think of it? Are their children happy there?

Would really appreciate any feedback.

Mine don't go there but know lots that do. It is not top of most people's lists round here but my friends' DCs are happy and doing well. One friend (who is a primary school teacher) chose to send her DCs there as opposed to another one down the road that everyone raves about.

My younger cousins went there and I know lots of still younger children who do or did. It's a good school. I don't know of anybody who is unhappy with it.

deaddei · 30/03/2010 20:33

Is it the one with no uniform?

castlesintheair · 30/03/2010 20:33

yes

deaddei · 30/03/2010 20:35

That was quick!!!!
ok 2nd question- is the deputy retiring?

castlesintheair · 30/03/2010 20:38

was 'refreshing'!!
don't know about deputy - can find out though

Thanks so much for the feedback I just want my son to be happy. It get's so confusing because of the obession with league tables. Think teachers should have more opportunity to get on with teaching and not have the added pressure of excessive paperwork. I believe that league tables and Ofsted reports can be very misleading.

Trying to choose between Darell and Kew Riverside primary schools, but I don't know anyone with kids at either school right now. Darell was criticised by recent Ofsted report but has lovely atmosphere and new deputy head, whereas Kew Riverside has outstanding Ofsted report but that was 3 years ago and the amazing head has since left. As they've both been through changes, has anyone got any info on how these schools are doing currently? Most important things for me are that the teachers encourage a caring environment and provide good teaching for each child to develop in a well-rounded way and build on their strengths. Any help much appreciated!

I thought Darrell were advertising for a new Head?

rrf · 02/05/2011 11:02

my daughter has got a place there. It wasn't a first choice, and have been a bit worried also, mainly because of other parent's response when i say she is going there! Nearly all have said 'oh well, there is a lot of movement between now and Sep' or something similar. Is it all really because of the one bad OFSTED? I have to admit, others responses have made me panicky about sending her there

Elibean · 02/05/2011 11:42

Have you been to see it? I don't know it, personally, but had very similar reactions to my dd's school when she started there - and its great, we love it. There can be a lot of reaction without knowledge, iyswim, sadly.

rrf · 02/05/2011 11:51

Yes i have, and tbh, i didn't mind it. It just made me think that other's knew something i didn't! I admit i am getting overly hyped about this whole school situation. It seems that this is the one school in the whole area which isn't sought after. Probably very much a case of reaction without knowledge from other parents rubbing off onto me!!
I know it sounds silly but the no uniform thing bothers me. It makes the school not look as well represented as others in the area, who all have lovely smart uniform!

Elibean · 02/05/2011 18:28

Not so sure about the 'smart' bit Grin

Good for you for looking around. If you felt good there, there is something good there: ignore the others (who have probably never been there!).

I think its one of the schools that are changing rapidly (only guessing, but from the snippets I've heard) so potentially an exciting time? My tip would be to get involved, be a class rep if you can, or join the PTA, so you can get an accurate picture of what the school is like, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and maybe help it grow...

Kewcumber · 02/05/2011 18:35

I know someone with 3 children there ranging from 6 - 10 and she is perfectly happy with the school

castlesintheair · 04/05/2011 18:27

Yes, they are looking for a new head at Darrell. That could make a big difference. The Deputy Head of my DCs' school was up for it but sadly (imo because she would have added tremendous value to Darrell) she has taken the headship at another outstanding school just down the road Wink.

Re the uniform or lack of it: there is actually one but children can choose not to wear one, so, of course ...

Halogen · 04/05/2011 20:42

Really sad to hear that the head is leaving at Darell as I liked her a lot when we looked round (my DD is starting in September). I also really hope that the new head doesn't bring in a uniform.
