Mnemonics and similar. Thought it might be fun if we could add our favourites, might help a few on the way:

DOES - do octopus eat sweets (or should that be octopi or something)

BECAUSE - big elephants can always understand small elephants.

NECESSARY - one collar two socks, never eat crisps eat salad sandwiches and remain young, not every cat eats sardines (some are really yummy)

RHYTHM - rhythm helps your two move

OCEAN - only cats eyes are narrow

CEMETERY - you say 'eee' when you go past one

TOGETHER - if you GET HER you'll be together

ACCOMMODATION - 2 caravans, 2 motels

PIece - PIEce of PIE

HEAR - you hear with your EAR

BELIEVE - there is a LIE you believe

ADDRESS - you add your address

Four, fourteen, but you can't be FORTY

FRIEND - FRI the end of your FRIEND

SEPARATE - is a rat of a word to spell, or always smell a rat with separate, or sepARATE (think of apart to remind yourself no e and the end)

DESSERT - SS - sweet stuff

WHERE, HERE, EVERYWHERE - place names have HERE in them

FEBRUARY - it's BR in England!

And planets distance from sun - MY VERY EASY METHOD: JUST SET UP 9 PLANETS

Anyone got any good suggestions? Especially for the simpler tricky words???

Should be RHYTHM - rhythm helps your TWO hips move!

Oh You Lovely Duck for Could and Would

Cortina · 25/03/2010 11:02

Yes, children love that one Bramshott!

I worry mine will think 'you' is 'u' though!

Another one I've thought of:

TEACHER - Teacher's have an ache! Or something like that.

Or Teacher's drink TEA.

Don't know - sorry, but we were trying to learn just those words this morning for DD's spelling test on the days of the week today !

Galena · 25/03/2010 13:10

WE Do Not Eat Sweets DAY
Not sure about Tues or Thur though

bruffin · 25/03/2010 13:26

I never actually across memenics when I was at school for spelling. DS came home with the odd one ie Because. I also think there was one for SAID but I can't remember what it was

For Wednesday I just broke it down to WED - NES - DAY. I still say that in my mind when I write it.

primarymum · 25/03/2010 16:16

Said is Sally Ann is dancing ( or the boys prefer Sally Ann is dead!)

Feenie · 25/03/2010 16:51

'Say it wrong is a common spelling strategy: Wed-nes-day

Should, would, could: O U Lucky Duck!
