so I had high hopes of this but am wondering whether I am not the only one who has seen absolutely no evidence of this in their school?

It doesn't have to be your own school AFAIK. No schools in my area have it but the private day nursery now provides before and after school places and do drop-offs and pick-ups. This is sufficient for the need at the moment.

We have an extended schools service that covers all the schools in our town.

They are fab, although I only really use the activites and workshops that they provide for the holidays. So far DD has done cheerleading, trampolining, glass painting, multi-sports, something else I can't remember. I think they also have an overview of all the out-of-hours provision in the town.
