DS is off the ORT and is supposed to be choosing school library books to bring home and read. Their books aren't great and they seem to let him pick himself, so often it isn't quite the right level or a particularly good, engaging story.
I've agreed with the school that we'll read books from home/public library, keep them in his book bag and update his reading record so they know what he's doing. I'm fine with this.
However, I'm really struggling to find good books that he likes. He loves non fiction (dinosaur encylepedias and 'i wonder why' etc) so we're fine there. But with fiction I'm finding it hard - he doesn't seem as engaged with stories as with facts, and there don't seem to be that many good books for boys around - I'm not sure a mischievous boy with a good imagination needs too much exposure to Horrid Henry and the like!
Any ideas? Please give me some authors/titles to go for. He's nearly 6, but is a good free reader and fairly mature in his understanding, interests and outlook so I think any titles for 7 year olds would be ok.
ps. am getting him the roald dahl box set for his birthday next month.
