Reception,breakfast andafter school club

Can children start these clubs as soon as they start reception? Do children cope with the extra hours this adds on to the school day? My dd has been to nursery since 4mths old.

DD has always gone to a mixture of childminder and clubs since reception. It's tiring I'm sure but no choice. She's fine.

each school is different so you really have to check with your own school - our reception dd couldn't do b'fast club until she was full days at school which for us was january

I wouldn't do it myself, unless there was no other option. DD1 is in reception now (March b'day) and is still shattered at the end of the day. There's no way she would cope with a few more hours added on.

My dd did 9-3 2 days a week at pre-school so I thought she would cope fine with the longer days. However, school is very different from nursery in that they have to be a lot more independent as there are far fewer adults looking after them and they have so much new stuff to learn. This can be stressful and tiring in itself.

I really think that children need time to chill out and just be, after school, and I think most after-school clubs are a bit full-on for that. I would prefer a childminder who would let the child have a bit of quiet time after school instead, but each to their own....

I would make sure she's allowed to stay by herself at breakfast club first if I were you, at our breakfast club only KS2 pupils can attend without adult with them.

so dd (reception) has been going 2 days a week since january (bfast club is 750, school starts at 850, and she is there until 530) and yes she is tired, but it does work for us. A good club will have chill out areas for those students who do want some quiet time - ours is fantastic and the girls love it there.

Ours can and the preschoolers aswell, which is what we need, however it is a very small village school.

DS2, who is in Reception, does breakfast club along with DS1 3 days a week.

He LOVES it and always wants to go. He does not seem to be anymore tired than the other days when I pick him up from school.

School is tiring at the age anyway so don't worry too much if you do not have a choice.

My dc have always done both breakfast and after school club, from day one, and now do activities after as well.

I'm still trying to find out what wears my two out
