World Book Day: anyone else letting standards slip?

When DS#1 was in primary school, for the first World Book Day I persuaded him that his favourite book in all the world was a venerable copy of House at Pooh Corner that I inherited from my parents. The year after that he took in the Encyclopaedia of Prehistoric Creatures (which admittedly probably was his favourite book at the time). I don't remember what DD's first World book day tome was, but I am fairly certain I gently strong-armed her into something that told the world (or the teacher) that we were a nicely MC book-loving family

This morning DS#2 will be presenting the teacher with a copy of Scooby Doo Mummy Madness bought for a pound from Smiths with a voucher from Maccie D's

Anyone else confess to falling WBD standards?

My ds (8) has taken in a Calvin and Hobbes Cartoon book that makes him practically wet himself laughing every time he reads it.

Not exactly great literature.

Dd2 (6) was persuaded out of a 'Club Penguin' sticker book and has taken a Charlie and Lola (I think, have to say that by this stage I was screeching harpy mother trying to make sure they didn't miss the bus).

Dd1 (10) has taken "Anne Franks Diary" and "The Wizard of Oz"

Oh come on! No-one else going to admit to trying to give worthy books to their DC? And then giving up

ours didn't have to bring books in, just dress up.

Some mothers made costumes based on actual characters from books..... the rest of us grabbed supermarket dress up out fits from the floors of bedrooms and sent them off...... there's a nice selection of Disney Princesses, Ben 10's and Spidermen in the infants room today

worst still.... this is my first world book day..... how low will my standards be by the time ds2 is in the school?

Hands up - guilty as charged! I "gently" encouraged DD (5) to take in a beautiful book of fairytales given to her by her grandparents. She was keen to dress up as "Belle" but refused to take in a book because we don't have the Disney (ie the "real") edition of Beauty and the Beast. I suggested to Ds(7) that he take in Gulliver's Travels but he hates dressing up, so chose his book on the basis that he could wear his normal clothes. He has gone in as "Nick Diamond" from Antony Horowitz's "I Know What You Were Doing Yesterday".

Oh hurray!

We usually have to dress up and take a book that matches the costume. But just the book today - thankyou new Mr HT!

Our world book day choices are influenced only by the dressing up outfits we already own.

DS says his favourite book is the LEGO catalogue

DD3 favouite book for years was the Argos catalogue . However this is her first year of dressing up, so we were a very worthy Puss In Boots, which made a nice change in a class of Harry Potters adn Dancing Princesses.

I had it easy. Fortunately my dd is into fairy's & princesses so she went in as tinkabelle this morning

I had experienced a stroke of genius this morning (gosh that's a sentence open to interpretation). I remembered that DS has the most fab dragon outfit. And then I remembered that someone had also just given us a copy of Puff the Magic Dragon. DS was particularly compliant (against the odds) and I was extremely pleased with myself.

DD on the other hand went in with Little Miss Giggles, which isn't bad, but its not exactly the Hobbit.

yes - DS went dressed as Dennis the Menace - we do have some books with him in as well as 100s of Beanos!

However, he did want to take 'A Brief History of Time' as his book - I did veto that on the grounds it is DHs but DS has read, and seemingly understood at least some of it.

He took a mathmagician book by JOnny Ball instead - thing is he does love fiction too!

We did get around the dressing up thing with DS#1 in reception by putting him in a tiger suit and taking in 'I don't want to go to bed' one year and 'The tiger you came to tea' the next Thank f* we don't have to this time as the tiger suit no longer fits

ProfYaffle - my outfit today was based on the one fancy dress costume I own - a witch. Regardless of event I have to be a witch. Today I was The Worst Witch

Tomorrow 7y DD will be My Naughty Little Sister. She will wear a short(!) blue dress we had made for 1940s day last year which is proper little girl sytle with bow, etc. worn with white knee socks, proper shoes, and high bunches with red ribbons. DD isn't really into dress up and I had to make an outfit fit what we already had. She had a Mary costume (in the bible?) or a Victorian maid outfit but she rejected both of these. She has to take her book with her.

DD1 went as a scientist this morning white lab coat, shirt and tie (no uniform normally) and a brain in one lab coat pocket and a heart in the another. Her book DK inside my body book! her choice!

Well my outfit tactic seemed to work, dd2 won a prize for the best outfit!
