Book Day Costumes - how to wire plaits?

Help! My daughter wants to go as Pippi Longstocking and I want to do something to her plaits to make them stand out at right angles. What kind of WIRE should I use/where do I buy it/how do I ensure that it will be both comfortable for her AND stay in all day?
Thank you!

pipecleaners might work

I have used a wire coathanger for a crocodile tail.

couldnt you use pipe cleaners from art/craft shop.
they are covered and flexible - not sure if theyre strong enough, you will need a trial run

Yes I was going to say pipecleaners.

Plait them in as you go then bend.

Ooooh please post a photo, what a great idea!

we don't seem to be doing World Book Day

Pencils work just as well, if you haven't got any pipecleaners.
