Pre - prep play assessment for spirited toddler

Hi, the nursery at the prep school that we would like our son to attend wants him to come and play for a couple of hours. There is no formal assessment, but they obviously are assessing a little bit! The problem is my 2.6 yr old is a little tearaway! He is very spirited and does on occasion hit out! Hmmm - what do you think am I wasting my time? Has anyone else's spirited child been offered a place at an independent school?

Sound like ds at that age.

He started at an independent school at 3. He lasted three weeks before we were asked to leave. (Although, to be fair he didn't last five minuets at a state one either, no problems with him at all, but long story).

He is 7 now and is lovely, but I should never have put him into such a rigid environment, the other little boys were so different to him, so quiet.

Clare, they are assessing you as much as your DS.

Pre-preps will happily do 'spirited' (my DCs have plenty of them at their schools). But if they do think he might be a bit on the over-exuberant side, they'll be watching you to see what you do about it...

Is he articulate?

Does he enjoy things like lego, building blocks etc?

Does he colour inside the lines?

Does he join in with things like singing?

Does he sit still and listen to a story?

These are the sort of things they'll be checking out. And you, too!

How is he with children he doesn't know? Does he hit out at them?

Dilemma, at dd's school there's a little boy who sounds similar to the girl you're describing. The school have been absolutely amazing with him.
