My gorgeous boy is happy, confident and bright, but he was slow in his speech development - he would talk no problem, we just didnt understand him! He is also behind with his reading and writing. He can pronouce the phonic sounds, and sound words out, but progress is soo slow. His teacher is suggesting he might have to repeat Yr 1 if he doesn't improve. He is creative and full of verbal ideas, just cannot seem to click on with the reading and writing. Any ideas please?

I'm sorry, I haven't any strategies to offer you, but suggesting that he repeats year 1 seems a bit drastic. Would it be worth seeking a meeting with the teacher and head together to discuss his progress and what they suggest should be done to support him? And does the head think that repeating a year would be the solution?
