I'm a teacher and we all have to dress up as characters from books for world book day. I am completely stumped as to what to wear, it needs to be female and these are the characters people have already said they're going as:

Dorothy from Wizard of Oz
Mrs Trunchbull
Mary Poppins
Red riding hood
Cinderella
The worst Witch
Princess Jasmine
Harry Potter characters etc.

Has anyone got any good ideas? Anything a bit more original? Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I'm going as Maid Marion - have been studying Robin Hood with Y5! I went as Cruella de Ville last time we did it.

Am slightly disturbed that if you search an ebay and even Woolies you tend to get 'adult' fancy dress - adult Red Riding Hoods, Alice, etc, with tiny skirts and suspenders! Not a good World Book Day look.

How about Wenda from the Where's Wally books. It shouldn't be too hard to do lots of red and white stripes.

Red riding hood's grandma
fairy godmother
white witch from narnia
burglar betty
queen of hearts from Alice

why must it be female?
cat in the hat?

nb how old are your class as it will help if they have heard of you

How about Dolores Umbrage from Harry Potter - evil punishments and all

DD is planning to dress up as Paddington Bear, but perhaps a costume more suited to a 7 y/o. Her friend is dressing up as Susan from Swallows & Amazons

DH suggested to her that she could take a plank and be the Wardrobe from the Lion, the Witch and - she was not impressed, however. . .

DD is being Puss in Boots - boots, leggings, tail made from tights, cat face paint, and big red hat. Would work for an adult too (providing you have the legs for leggings )

Pippi Longstocking.

yeah second mrs badger - i would go as lord asriel in full adventuring gear! i like dolores umbrage tho. baddies are more interesting.

Tortington · 23/02/2010 19:16

Alice in wonderland - obviously! its just an alice band and a pinafore.

MegSophandEmma · 23/02/2010 19:17

Arwen from Lord of the Rings?

If you're really stuck for ideas, do a search on 'world book day', and spend 15 minutes reading through the MN archives.

There are lots of ideas there (some obvious, some truly inspired), as we have this thread every year - as you might expect.

omaoma · 23/02/2010 19:23

ooh or lucy from narnia books with all the archery stuff. They appear as grown ups in The horse And His Boy so it's not too weird...

Last year I went as the witch from Room on the Broom.

Year before that I was the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Also been Paddington.

This year I will be the Gruffalo.

Why do you have to be female?
