What bedtime stories does your KS1 son love?

Both DS (5.8) and I are bored with his stock of bedtime stories; we seem to have reached a point where a lot of his books are a bit babyish.

We've tried some Roald Dahl, which he loves, but he says he prefers books with pictures.

DS likes dinosaurs, wildlife, superheroes, space, transport - the usual.

So, any ideas for some exciting new fiction books we could try?

(I'm thinking of stories I'd read to him by the way, or that we'd read together, rather than books he could read entirely unaided. But actually, any ideas would be great.)

Thanks for any ideas.

Take a look at the Astrosaurs series - Its about dinosaurs in Space. My 6yo DS loves them.
He also loves the Gargoylz books - seem to be written with little boys in mind. HTH

Hiccup books by Cressida Cowell, Mr Gum books are a new hit and Captain Underpants. Real big time favourite are TinTin though. - I love those too

Dd1 (tom boy) reads to herself most nights and likes Horrid Henry, Roald Dahl (charlie and the chocolate factory and fantastic Mr Fox),
animal crackers, oliver moon and mudpuddle farm.

She also likes anything to do with dinosaurs or cars.

Ds of the same age has enjoyed Roald Dahl and the following series:

Captain Underpants
Famous Five
Mr Gum
Mr Majeka
Faraway Tree

He quite liked Astrosaurs although some of the humour went over his head a little. We're just about to read Dick King-Smith's the Hodgeheg and Arabel's Raven

DS is 5 and ive got him some chapter books for me to read to him at night as I also felt some of his books were getting a bit young for him . He loves Horrid Henry (but only the books and not the tv programme which is a bit strange!) and all the Dirty Bertie books. We read a chapter or 2 each time and its working very well!

Ooh, have just checked out Astrosaurs. Can imagine DS loving these. Can't believe I've never heard of them! For some reason, there seems to be a gaping hole in my knowledge of children's books for around six years old plus.

Have been on Amazon and also the online library ordering service, and ordered up some Astrosaurs, Dirty Bertie and Captain Underpants.

Thanks ever so much. Am actually rather excited!

DS is almost the same age. He has had a big pile of Horrid Henry books for Christmas ans is loving them.

MY DS has the whole of the Astrosaurs series and loves them. Also likes the Jeremy Strong books. Strangely he hates Horrid Henry!

I found out about these books by asking a youngish male member of staff in Waterstones what they would recommend. They were extremely knowledgeable!
