How much warning to you get to produce supplies for a project?

Homework comes out on Wednesdays for my year 2 DD. Last night I open the book and they need, foil, cottn reels (whatever those are!), and pasticine... get this... before Friday. So that leaves... erm... today. And we will all be spending tonight at the parent-teacher consultations. So when am I supposed to procure these things.

The proct is DT and building some kind of vehicles, which I would very much like to support. But, 36 hours? What are they thinking?

And is anyone can tell me what cotton reel is and where I might find them on a whilwind shopping trip into town at lunch time today I would be ever so grateful.

cotton reels are the little round plastic things that cotton are round wound. (I suspect they will be wheels on the project)

I very much doubt many people have them "to hand"

Try craft shops or haberdashers (and time travel back to the 1950's)

God Strix, they're taking the P. Surely all the topics are planned a term ahead so they should've given you at least a week.

My DS was making puppets this week so we had to supply sticks/wooden spoons or socks, googly eyes, wool for hair, and fabric but at least we had notice on Friday to bring to school Weds.

Since my DC have started school I've realised the need to save and recycle pipe cleaners, wool and fabrics and keep some craft supplies at home.

Having done the puppets we now have to make a board game for next Monday. The note came out last week but my DS left it in his tray. Luckily there was a mention in the weekly newsletter we get via email so I got the info on Monday. Nothing after school today so its out with the cardboard and paint.

PS , yes that's a cotton reel. But unless you'd some old ones you'll have to unwind all the thread.

Cotton reels (with cotton on) shouldn't be too hard to come by - supermarkets and some corner shops/newsagents sell them. You could cut the thread off instead of unwinding it.

But YANBU that it is too short notice. If you can't get cotton reels perhaps send a substitute that is a similar shape, eg plastic bottle tops from laundry detergent or something?

Thanks for the comments. Gald I'm not the only one who finds their time scales a bit unrealistic. I now have four "cotton reels" with shiny string in a variety of colors. I figure DD can leave the string on for suitable tacky girly wheels.

I've done my best and they will now get what they get.

I may express my dissatisfaction at tonight consultation... or I may chicken out for fear of being the obnoxious working parent who can't be bothered to pull her weight at the school gate.

Oh well...
