How often do your DC change their reading book? And what is the system (am thinking more of YR, Y1 and Y2)

DS is in Y1 and books only get changed when they are listened to read (or if I realise we have had the same books for a long time and ask if he can have a new one).

They are meant to be listened to twice a week although it isn't this often. I do listen to readers once a week so am doing my bit .

Just wondered what happens in other schools, as it seems from reading other threads that people get to change their children's books more often ie they don't need a teacher/teaching assistant/parent helper to do the changing.

There should have been a question mark at the end of the title . And also wondering how many books children tend to have at a time (DS currently has two at once).

She gets two books (ORT)
TBH they only hear her read properly once a week but as she reads to me every night and I mark it in her reading record that seems to suffice.

In reception the parents changed the book with the children in the morning at drop off. Not all changed every day. Some read more than one book a day.

In year one they started out choosing their book with the TA or teacher and now they are responsible for choosing their own. My son changes book virtually every day. Not everyone does. Sometimes "things" happen and the books don't get changed at all but it's not very often.

I help out with reading in class once a week as well (tbh thats probably why we're sort of left to get on with it)

Books changed every other day. We out book bags into a crate and the TA or oatent helper changes them.

they get 2 books at a time.

They do guided reading regularly but not individual.

yr 1, ds3 changes his twice a week (oxford reading tree) + has one from his choice (library book)that we tend to share rather than him reading on his own.

If you are doing the changing yourself, how do the teachers know what book the children are on? Do they go through the reading records I wonder?

I suppose it also makes a difference whether the school is following a scheme ie ORT or has book bands, where you'd know that if it is ie yellow band the book should be the right level.

We have a library book once a week as well, but that is a bit different.

dds books are in strict order (trunk books then additional) she has to read them all before progressing to next level.

If you don't read at home they insist on hearing the child read the book and as they're so short staffed the non home readinfg child would probably only get one book a week (ie my child has 14 books per week)

DD's books changed Mon/Wed/Fri. Can either have 1 or 2 books at a time (ie parent chooses whether their DC should have one or two). School recommends 15-20 mins reading per night.

Always changed by classroom assistant. They only seem to change if you have written (in homework diary) that you have finished both books, although if you have finished one by Friday then they will change that one.

I have checked and they have only heard her reading twice - once this term and once last term. I did ask and they said it was based on need (ie they listen to the children who are struggling or who don't get support from home more often). I don't mind as I hear her every day .

They have asked for parent helpers but only to listen to the children who dpn't speak fluent english (ie esp where the parents don't speak good english) - i would imagine they hear them much more often.

That being said although getting through lots of books they seem to have system where each child has to read all the books.... I had to complain to head teacher at start if year DD was on Ginn scheme last year and at start of year 1 put her on ORT 2 despite her being able to read reasonably well.... we made it to level 4 before I realised that the gap between her reading ability and the school books was growing not shrinking due to the extra reading we were doing! They moved her to level 6 and now on level 7.

She could manage harder.... but I am happy with this level as some of the stories more complex even if she knows all the words - each book takes her 20 mins to read (I timed tonight after reading thread earlier) so 1 book a day is about right her her.

DD is in reception and can get a new book twice a week, monday and thursday

Ds is in reception. He reads to someone at school twice a week. His reading book gets changed 2x per week if we've read it at home, and he has just started getting two - but we can ask to change it if we've read it before change day.

He also gets to choose one or two books from the library - we're currently on dinosauts and ants!

At DS's infants school (so YR-Y2) they use the NC book band system.
Children/parents can change their children's book as frequently as they like (so some do daily, some every 2 days, some weekly). The books are all in boxes by book band so normally DS picks out one he likes the look of from the right box and I do a quick check it's not one he's already had.

He gets to choose a library book once a week.

DD (Y1) changes her reading book when we ask her to. I have given up writing in her record book as it was a one way conversation.

I don't know if she gets heard to read by the teacher much if at all.

There are a fab group of parents who go in every day and it seems they tell the teacher where the child is in terms of ability!

to add we have the samer crate system... books get put in book bag by classroom assistant book bags given to children each day on way out of school.... strict order of books, changed mon/wed/fri - only changed if you sign that they are finished.

I always get depressed when I read threads like this.

Depressed by the realisation that DD's school is pretty rubbish.

DS is in reception and parents can change the book in the morning whenever we like. He seems to be heard individually about once every 2 weeks.

When I was Y1 teacher full time (private school 18 girls), either a TA or myself heard them individually everyday apart from the one day a week when they group read instead. They would take a new book whenever they could read the one they were on fluently. I would stretch more fluent readers by giving them comprehension questions.
When a new more experienced parallel teacher started she discouraged the daily reading and focused on group reading, saying it was a waste of teacher/TA's time.
It is difficult to know what the best system is, but I personally like the fact I can read with my son and change the book whenever I like rather than waiting for someone else to do it.

We encourage our children to change them at least once a week, and to choose 2 books at a time. We keep records of how often children change their books and chase up any who haven't changed them by the end of the week, often sending home extra ones if they haven't brought any in to change

DD in reception.They do guided reading twice a week and bring the book home after.In additiom they have a second book which is changed as often as they want out of a big box.

Dd chooses how many books and how often she changes them. Tends to pick out one or two a day depending how long they are and three at weekends.
There is no individual reading in our school. Reading schemems and general library books are all graded, children are assessed termly(or if you request) and assigned a colour and they have free choice of all the books in that colour.
Parents are asked to listen to readers daily, strugglers or children whose parents are unable to do daily reading are listened to by TA's and volunteers.
Works well in dd's school anyway.

dd (year one) is permitted to change her book as frequently as daily, on the condition that she has read her book at least twice.

This wasn't made clear to us at the beginning of the year, so it was only getting changed about once a week. This meant that she was lagging behind some of the other dcs which was slightly disappointing as she was capable of reading more.

I was also rather disappointed that her teacher and/or ta have only managed to listen to her 3 times in total since September.

She has a reading card that dh and I sign as "proof" we have listened to her read the book at least twice.

Ds yr 1 two books per night (scheme varies, currently ORT). Reads to TA or teacher every day.
