Hi my daughter is in year 2 and today she has been asked, along with four other children, to go into a room and take a maths test - anyone any idea why this would be?

It was probably an internal test to assess where she is.

Y2 is a SATs year, but the result that children get on test day is only part of their overall grade. January is quite early for a teacher to be doing SATs, although as there is no set date for testing in Y2 it is possible. More likely it was a mini assessment which will be used to inform the teacher of where your child is.

At our school children from Y2 onwards do tests every term, which are used by management to check the progress of children (and the skills of the teachers). There is lots of testing in schools these days, and SATs are just a small part of it.

For young children it is easier to administer the tests in small groups.
