School closed today what do you think might happen tomorrow?

Snow arrived here overnight and has pretty much snowed all day. Unsurprisingly school shut today. Now it has stopped snowing now but still thick on the round. Going to freeze solid tonight i expect given the predicted -7 degrees. What are the chances of school being open you you think? I am thinking conditions could be even more dangerous than today?

I should think it will be shut again. DD's school was shut on Tuesday and today and we've already been told it will be shut again tomorrow. Mind you we have had the snow since 17th December(!) and it still hasn't disappeared.

ours is closed again tomorrow. whereabouts are you?
id there a school or local authority website you can check?

mvemjsunp · 06/01/2010 20:28

Both my kids' schools have already announced that they are closed tomorrow.

Judging by FB friends' status updates, lots of schools have already made the decision to close.

Our BBC local radio website is already showing tomorrow's closures.

SuperBunny · 06/01/2010 20:28

My school was closed today and is definitely shut tomorrow. Staff have to go in but no children.

lilac21 · 06/01/2010 20:29

The school I work at was hoping to open, but at 8.30 (when I was almost there!) I got a text saying it was closed. I had a further text at 3pm to say it would not be open tomorrow either. I'm glad, as the roads are icy already and 7 miles is too far to walk.

NoahAndTheWhale · 06/01/2010 20:29

Our school was shut today, but there was only a bit more snow today and the website says they are hoping to open tomorrow. I am hoping as well

ninah · 06/01/2010 20:31

ooh I hope it stays shut.

GossipMonger · 06/01/2010 20:31

ours is closed tomorrow as well

its supposed to be very icy tonight

TigerDrivesAgain · 06/01/2010 20:33

Our County Council website says if your school was closed today assume it's closed tomorrow. DS's school definitely closed, I can't really see them opening on Friday. We can't drive at all in our village so will have an interesting walk in once it does open.

jobhuntersrus · 06/01/2010 20:49

Good idea to check county council website. Was thinking they wouldn't make a decision until the morning but worth a look.

DD's school closed for last hour or so on Tuesday when our snow hit (yorkshire) and has been open even since- but they are the only one in the area that has and one of only a handful in the city. I guess you never can tell until the day

Clary · 06/01/2010 23:20

Go to BBC.co.uk and then click onto the snow story and then on to the local area link - should take you to a list of places and thence to the website of the local radio station.

Ours has a logn list of cancelled events today, tomorrow and even Friday, and a very short list of schools closed.

More than 100 were closed in the county today but it looks as tho most of them are waiting tilll tomorrow to decide about tomorrow (if that makes sense).

DS2 most aggrieved that his was open

I am a headteacher and a mum.
In both roles i have to decide whether i am in a position to open my rural school, and how i am going to transport my sons to their schools.
Believe me my decision is always taken on the needs of my pupils and their parents and everyone's safety.
Every occasion this decision has to made i am up and active at 5am. i have to evaluate the risk present, the potential risk and inform everyone from the local authority to my children's school as to what decision i make.
All this without guidance from any local or national authority.
Yesterday we opened, my son's school closed, i had to organise childcare and be at my school by 8am. By midday we closed because of weather and because we had no cook to prepare lunch.
Today i made the decision not to open....i am sure i will be someone's voodoo doll.

MorocconOil · 07/01/2010 18:06

Lol at voodoo doll.

I think all schools (where it did not snow today or overnight) should open tomorrow. Been out in the car today and all main roads clear, just drove home in -4c and it was not slippy even on roads covered with snow.
No excuse and anyway we are getting fed up of it now

trickerg · 07/01/2010 18:55

That is a really comment ripeberry.

How can a road not be potentially slippy when it's covered in snow and the temperature is -4C?

It is always dangerous to drive in freezing conditions.

Please be careful.....

What is everyone going to do if this weather drags on though? Could be weeks of this. This is not a normal winter.
In the 1980's we had loads of snow and we were all expected to come in.
When we were doing our mock exams in the January, the school heating broke down, but we (the ones doing the exams) still had to come in and sit in a freezing hall with our hats, coats and gloves and then walk back home through shin deep snow.
Why can't schools just open for the ones who CAN make it in?
