Wiltshire primary schools, esp Marlborough area

It looks like we are on the move to the Marlborough/Hungerford area this year. I know the area quite well as my parents are round there but I'm totally thrown by the primary schools. I will be looking for a reception plae in September and a place for my current year 3 son at Easter or September. I know I've missed the registration window so I will have to take what is available but does that mean all the good schools will have gone? My husband will be travelling back to London most days so near Great Bedwyn and the motorway is best so looking at Albourne and surrounding area I think, also want to be catchment for St Johns. Any help really appreciated - I don't know where to begin and how much to read in to some of the Osted reports!
