Key Stage 2 Maths Syllabus Question

Are there any maths teachers who can tell me if the following topics are taught in Key Stage 2 maths?
a) an equilateral triangle is an isosceles triangle (i.e. a special case of an isosceles triangle)
b) a square and a rectangle are parallelograms

don't know to the first, yes to the second

I teach in sen not mainstream, but hopefully someone clever will turn up in a mo

gigglebells thanks for the info, the second is similar principle to first so I guess the first will also be taught. Interesting to know, I thought it might have confused the children to mix the concepts, but it's good to see that they can deal with this

Yes to both, in upper KS2.
They should also be using the terms square and oblong, as both belong to the rectangle family, a square being a regular rectangle and an oblong being irregular.

My ds is in year 4 and has covered/is covering both these topics.

But not on Christmas Day!!!!!!!!

What are you tutoring him for? 11+?

seeker, yes 11+, looking at sample papers and expanding on some of the concepts involved, but there are a lot of topics that need to be revised, so don't want to introduce anything unnecessary. Good to see that your DS is learning this at such a young age

You need to be a bit careful depending on the area you're in. We found that there were topics that came up in the 11+ that weren't covered, or not in any great detail in the KS2 syllabus. Algebra is a case in point - there seemed to be quite a lot of it in the 11+.

yes I've noticed the same about algebra. Also there is one problem about a milkman delivering milk and not being able to visit the same road twice (which as far as I can see is an Euler path problem), not sure if this is on the syllabus and what it comes under on the syllabus.

Oh God, I remember that bloody milkman! I remember that my very unmathematical dd found it really easy because they do so much problem solving in KS2. Have no idea how she solved it but she did in no time flat!

I wish she could can that knowledge and explain it to the next crop of children doing the test. I think it's one of those questions that you either see straight away or you end up going round in circles for hours
