Year 3 children with an IEP

Hi, I just wondered if anyone out there has a year 3 child who has an IEP/is on SEN register.

If they are, what sort of involvement do you have with the school/SENCo - do you have termly reviews with the teacher and senco? anything else?

I am just concerned that the teacher who previously seemed to be coming down on the side of DS having dyslexia, now seems to be pulling back and basically treating him as simply a low ability kid. He's not even offering an IEP now after a chat with him today....

Hi,is your son having any extra help at school at all? Usually to be offered an iep there has been some other input which is then 'not working' enough.

It would be helpful for you to make an appointment with the senco so that you can have your mind put at rest.

with an iep reviews are usually termly with the class teacher, who knows the child best, but the senco can become involved in some cases.

He has 2 sessions reading with the TA and one session with the teacher per week, which the teacher listed as his 'extra' help. That's interesting about the Senco not usually being involved in the reviews - we weren't sure. DS infant school senco always attended so we felt that the senco not attending now might be a sign of them treating Ds' problems less seriously, but clearly we may well have read too much into that!

one thing he said which did make me sad and worried was that children who come into the year as below average as DS, usually stay below average and never make up that ground

I feel he's given up on Ds already

and that can't be true, surely!

I would be concerned about this teacher- sounds like they can't be bothered to support the children who are falling behind. In our school the SENCO is involved in all IEPs and children get a lot more support than this if it is needed.

It is at year 3 that the real intervention seems to start as many things are harder to spot before this age (to do with the move from infants to juniors and more formal methods).

BTW it is ok to be below average as long as your child is making progress at an acceptable rate.

My ds1 is in Yr5 now but has had IEPs throughout his time at school.

Each school seems to have their own system for how they are written. At ours the parents are invited to come in to discuss targets with the teacher and the SENCO. Reviews are usually every term.

If your ds needs extra support then he should have an IEP to set out his targets and the methods to be used to help him achieve them.

Hi, my ds is in Year 3 and has had an IEP since Yr 2. This is done with the SENCO teacher not his class teacher. At the end of each term I receive an updated IEP to see if any targets have been met or any new ones added. I also keep in constant contact (via e-mail) with the senco teacher and have regular reviews. My ds is classed as having SPLds - what they used to call in school dsylexia. I had to fight through Yr 1 and Yr 2 for the school to do something for him as I knew something just wasn't right - it took my 3hrs one parents night to get them to help him in Yr 2 rather than wait to put anything into action until Yr 3. He now has morning sessions Mon-Fri for extra literacy & numeracy, is using the Toe-by-Toe prog, is on the ABC prog and has just started Read,Write Inc. All in all I'm just at the point where I am happy they have finally put things into place for by ds but I have had to fight with the school for 2 years to get things done. (sorry for the long post). Oh and btw I would not have been happy at the comment the teacher made that your ds would never make up ground - sounds to me like he has given up and can't be bothered.

It's all useful information, and Sandy your ds sounds as if he is getting the sort of thing we hoped for with ds.

DH and I are going to write a letter over christmas to the school and go in with a few more guns blazing. thanks all.
